Boston University의 2016년 입학 사정 상황

  

며칠 전 Boston University의 입학사무처장인 Kelly A. Walter로부터 다음과 같은 이메일을 받았다. 2016-2017학년도 입학 사정 작업을 끝내고 소감과 함께 입학 사무 통계 수치를 보내 온 것이다. 필자는 그의 메일을 읽으며 올해 입학 경쟁률이 예년에 비해 월등히 심해진 것을 보고 무척 놀랐다.

 

Boston University는 미국에서 New York University 다음으로 가장 학생 수가 많은 사립대학이다. 또 수십 개의 대학이 있는 Boston 지역에서도 가장 학생 수가 많다. 한국인 학생 수만 500-600명일 정도로 외국인 학생이 많이 재학하고 있는 대학이다. 학교 측에서는 수 년 전부터 경영대학의 수준을 향상시키기 위하여 거금을 투자하고 있다.

 

공대와 자연과학 프로그램은 다소 약한 편이지만, 공연예술 (Performing Arts) 프로그램은 최고 수준을 유지하고 있다. Boston 지역에 물가가 비싸고 등록금이 녹녹하지 않은 대학이지만, Boston 지역은 뉴욕 다음으로 대학생들이 가장 선호하는 지역으로, 오랜 학문적 전통의 대학 도시로 문화의 도시여서 학생들이 지역사회에서 얻을 수 있는 혜택은 단순히 등록금만으로 매길 수 없는 것이다.

 

다음의 이메일을 확인하면 올해 Boston University의 경쟁률을 이해할 수 있을 것이다.

As you may know, we recently released admission decisions to the record-breaking 57,416 students that applied for admission to BU. The work of the Board of Admissions was particularly difficult this year, primarily as a result of the extraordinary quality of the applicant pool. And with a class size of only 3,500 freshmen, competition for admission to BU was keener than ever. Here are some more details about BU's Class of 2020.

The admit rate was 29%. Admission to some of our schools and colleges was even more selective. For example:

 

Questrom School of Business - 22%

Kilachand Honors College - 14%

Average Rank in Class: Top 8%

Average GPA: A-

Average SAT (CR+M+WR): 2067

Average ACT: 31

 

32% of the Class was admitted through Early Decision and Early Decision 2.

Admitted students represent all 50 states and D.C., Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and Guam.

 

24% of our admitted class are international students hailing from 117 countries around the world.

 

We are very proud of the exceptional quality of our incoming class and look forward to seeing them grow and fulfill their personal and academic potential here at BU. 장점

ü  우수한 Media Program

ü  최고의 작업 치료학 (Occupational Therapy)

ü  우수한 범죄학 (Criminology) 프로그램

 

약점

ü  학교 빌딩들은 Boston 시내에 위치해 있기 때문에 의 동네 빌딩과 뒤섞여 있어서 어디가 학교인지 모를 정도이다.

ü  사립대학임에도 불구하고 너무나 많은 학생이 재학하고 있어 학생 하나 하나에 대한 관심과 관리가 덜 이루어진다.

ü  Boston 지역의 물가가 높기 때문에 아파트 임대료와 생활비가 비싸다.

ü  Residencial College로 학교 내 기숙사 시설이 훌륭하지만 기숙사가 부족하여 학생의 수요를 전부 충족시키지 못한다.
