독일어 능력과 독일 대학 입학

 

 

 

 

 

 

최근 미국에서 공부하는 교포 학생이 이메일로 다음과 같은 질문을 했다. 미국의 사립대학은 말할 것도 없고 주립대학도 학비가 만만치 않기 때문에 독일의 대학 진학을 고려한다고 했다. 독일 대학에 진학하려면 이공계열은 적어도 B2 사회과학계열은 C1의 독일어 능력을 구사해야 한다.

 

“How many years will it take for a non-German speaker to get fluent in the German language so that I can attain technical courses taught in German language in German universities?”

 

위의 질문에 대하여 다음과 같은 명료한 답변을 했다.

“A succinct answer to your questions is - with dedication it takes 3 hours everyday, for 5 days a week for 58 weeks or roughly 14.5 months to master this and similar languages.”

 

하루 3시간씩 주 5일 58주간 대충 1년 2-3개월 공부하면 대학에서 수업할 수 있는 수준의 독일어를 유창하게 구사할 수 있다. 언어, 영어, 독일어, 불어, 스페인어, 이태리어 등의 유럽의 언어 능력은 6단계로 평가한다. A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2의 레벨인데, 이를 CEFR scale (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)이라고 한다. A1은 완전초보라 할 수 있고, C2는 거의 원어민 수준의 언어능력이라고 할 수 있다.

아주 오래 전부터 독일 정부에서는 전 세계적으로 독일어 교육을 위해 각 나라에 Goethe Institute (괴테 독일문화원)을 설립하여 독일어를 수업의 기회를 제공했다. 따라서 독일 내외의 독일어 연수기관에서는 괴테 독일문화원의 교육과정과 교재를 사용하고 있다.

다음은 괴테 독일문화원에서 제시한 학생들의 독일어 수준을 평가할 때의 가이드라인이다.

 

 

[ELEMENTARY Language Use]

A1 : 120 hours

Outcome :

①      Understand and use familiar, everyday expressions and very simple sentences.

②      Introduce yourself and others as well as ask others about themselves – e.g. where they live, who they know and what they own – and respond to questions of this nature.

③      Communicate in a simple manner if the person you are speaking to speaks slowly and clearly and is willing to help.

 

A2 : 120 hours

Outcome :

①      Understand sentences and commonly used expressions associated with topics directly related to your direct circumstances (e.g. personal information or information about your family, shopping, work, immediate surroundings).

②      Make yourself understood in simple, routine situations dealing with a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and common topics.

③      Describe your background and education, immediate surroundings and other things associated with immediate needs in a simple way.

 

[INDEPENDENT Language Use]

B1 : 120 hours

Outcome :

①      Understand the main points when clear, standard language is used and the focus is on familiar topics associated with work, school, leisure time, etc.

②      Deal with most situations typically encountered when travelling in the language region.

③      Express yourself simply and coherently regarding familiar topics and areas of personal interest.

④      Report on experiences and events, describe dreams, hopes and goals as well as make short statements to justify or explain your own views and plans.

 

B2 : 150 hours

Outcome :

①      Understand the main contents of complex texts on concrete and abstract topics.

②      Understand specialised discussions in your own primary area of specialisation.

③      Communicate so spontaneously and fluently that a normal conversation with native speakers is easily possible without a great deal of effort on either side.

④      Express yourself on a wide range of topics in a clear and detailed manner, explain your position on a current issue and indicate the benefits and drawbacks of various options.

 

[AUTONOMOUS Language Ability]

C1 : 180 hours

Outcome :

①      Understand a wide range of challenging, longer texts and also grasp implicit meanings.

②      Express yourself spontaneously and fluently without having to search for words frequently and noticeably.

③      Use the language effectively and flexibly in your social and professional life or in training and studies.

④      Make clear, structured and detailed statements on complex topics and apply various means of text association appropriately in the process.

 

C2 : 180 hours

Outcome :

①      Effortlessly understand practically everything which you read or hear.

② Summarise information from various written and spoken sources, logically recounting the reasons and explanations.

③      Express yourself spontaneously with high fluency and precision and also make finer nuances of meaning clear in more complex topics.
