미국의 미술 대학 소개 (1) – 시각 디자인 전공

시각 디자인(Visual Communication Design)이란 Mass Media의 정보화 사회에서 시각적인 감각을 통하여 효율적으로 정보를 전달하기 위한 디자인을 의미합니다. 인쇄매체와 영상매체가 발달한 현대사회는 시각적 이미지에 많은 영향을 받고 있기 때문에 시각 디자인은 중요한 관심사가 되고 있습니다. 과거 평면적인 인쇄 매체에 의존했던 것과 달리 TV, 컴퓨터 등의 Multimedia 등장에 힘입어 영상매체에 의한 컴퓨터 그래픽, 전시회, 박람회 같은 입체공간의 이미지 관리를 위한 시각전달 영역까지 그 범위가 확대된 것입니다.

시각적인 감각을 통하여 효율적으로 정보를 전달하기 위한 시각 디자인
시각 디자인과는 크게 그래픽 디자인과 영상 디자인으로 나눌 수 있습니다. 그래픽 디자인은 우리가 접하는 신문, 잡지, 포스터, 팸플릿, 포장 등과 같이 인쇄에 의한 프로세스를 통하여 제작되어 정보를 취급하는 인쇄매체의 디자인을 말하며, 영상 디자인은 컴퓨터 그래픽 등의 영상과 비디오, 영화, 애니메이션 등 주로 영화기구와 재생장치를 매개로 하여 정보 전달을 취급하는 영상매체 디자인을 말합니다.

 

시각 디자인은 그래픽 디자인과 영상 디자인으로 나뉘어
그래픽 디자인은 모든 시각예술에 대한 중요한 개념적, 인지적, 공간적 원리를 가르쳐 주는 기초 프로그램에서 시작됩니다. 코스는 주로 Drawing, 2차원적 그리고 3차원적 디자인과 색상에 대한 것입니다. 이런 기초 프로그램에는 미술사, 인문과학 그리고 사회과학이 포함됩니다. 그래픽 디자인, 활판 인쇄술과 사진의 역사와 실제에 대한 개요를 배우게 됩니다. 시각적 은유, 단어와 이미지의 관계에 대해 이해가 높아집니다.
