재수생을 위한 대안, PG (Post Graduate) Program

오랜 동안 친분을 맺어 왔던 Don Smith 선생님이 Blue Ridge School에서 New York주의 Long Island에 위치한 Ross School의 Director, Enrollment Management & External로 보직을 옮겼다며 국제전화를 걸어왔다. 필자는 Smith 선생님이 명문 보딩 스쿨의 입학사정관과 입학처장을 거치며 경력을 쌓아왔던 것을 알고 있었기 때문에 승직 축하 메시지를 띄웠다. Smith 선생님은 올 가을에 서울을 방문하면 필자에게 근사한 저녁을 사겠다는 말도 잊지 않았다.

Ross School enjoys a strong and well-deserved reputation as an innovative boarding school, enrolling over 500 boarding and day students in Pre-Nursery to Grade 12. Ross offers a Post Graduate program for high school graduates who would like additional time to prepare for college. As you may know, Ross is considered to be among America's best boarding schools in terms of boarding facilities, academic programs and college placement.

 

I am writing to let you know that there are openings in our PG program and I hope you will refer any candidates who are seeking a unique and exceptional post-graduate experience.

 

At Ross School, Post Graduate students customize their learning in order to pursue their passions. Ross tailors the Post Graduate experience to meet a student's needs and interests while creating a pathway to success. Working together with the student and family, an appropriate course of study is established that may include internships, test preparation for SAT, ACT and TOEFL, in-depth studies and/or service learning programs.

 

Students participate in the capstone year at Ross, which offers an interdisciplinary overview of world cultural history through the lenses of mathematics, science, art history and English, tracing the evolution of human consciousness from the beginning of time to present day. Students also enjoy electives, including visual arts, music and advanced sciences or history.

 

Post Graduates are also offered the unique opportunity to engage in an intensive Independent Study Project, similar to the Senior Project, wherein students embody their passions through a process and product that integrates such Ross School principles as multiple intelligences, cultural and historical context, personal reflection, application of sciences and technology, and pursuit of excellence.

 

The balance of time outside core classes is scheduled with specialized courses, college counseling, internships, field work or an array of electives that advance students in the college application process. Post Graduates at Ross have enjoyed marked successes in the program. They enter their college years with a strong sense of self, an ability to connect to their community, and well developed voice as a leader.

우리나라의 재수생과 같은 개념의 Post Graduate Program

PG는 고등학교 졸업 후 고등학교에서 일 년간 더 머무르며 대학에 입학 전 학습 기술의 완성도를 높이기 위해 집중적으로 공부하는 일 년간의 교육을 의미한다. 마치 13학년으로 고등학교를 일 년 더 다니는 것으로, 우리나라의 재수생과 비슷하다고 하겠다. 그러나 우리나라의 재수생과 다른 점은 학원이 아니라 정규 사립 고등학교나 보딩 스쿨에서 제공하는 학업 프로그램을 수행한다는 점과, 고등학교 졸업 후 대학 합격자가 발표된 이후에 프로그램에 입하는 것이 아니라, 12학년에 올라가면서 PG 프로그램으로의 입학을 지원한다는 점이다.

대입 준비에 만전을 기하도록 짜인 PG 프로그램은 특별히 원하는 대학교에 입학할 수 있도록 학생들을 준비 시키는 프로그램이다. 즉 PG 학생들은 기숙사에서 생활하며 대학 입학 합격률을 향상시키도록 학업과 특별활동에 집중할 수 있도록 고안된 교과과정에 참여해야 한다.

소규모의 학급에서 토론 수업을 통해 수업을 진행하고 Study Hall의 야간 자습 시간이 주어져 공부에 전념하게 하며, Guidance Counselor은 학구적인 분위기를 조성해 준다. 특히 스포츠 프로그램이나 특별활동, 봉사활동 등의 다양한 프로그램을 제공하여 스포츠 레코드를 향상시켜 합격의 가능성을 높인다. Study Hall, 외부인의 방문객 방문 시간, Light-Out, 자습 시간 등 철저히 짜인 규칙과 스케줄을 따라 더욱 학구적이고 규칙적인 분위기에서 공부한다는 것은 Postgraduate Program의 학생들이 더 성공적으로 대학 입시 준비를 할 수 있게 만든다. 또한 대학 진학 상담과 관련된 정보가 학생들에게 자주 전달되고 상담 교사와 긴밀한 관계를 가지며, SAT 준비 반, 각종시험의 모의 고사도 자주 실시하는 등 성공적인 대학 진학을 위해 주력한다.

PG 프로그램의 또 다른 장점은 학생으로 하여금 대학 생활에 잘 적응할 수 있도록 학습 기술과 방법에 대한 교육을 한다는 점이다. PG 프로그램에서는 대학생활의 성공을 위해 필요한 기술에 관한 세미나가 필수 과목으로 제공되어 학생들은 분석능력, 효과적인 독서 능력, 작문 능력, 대중 연설과 발표 능력, 리서치 방법, 논문 작성 방법 등을 익히게 된다. PG 프로그램에서 이수하는 과목들은 대학에서 학점을 인정 받을 수도 있다.

PG는 대학 입학 후 문화적 충격을 덜어 줄 수도

PG 프로그램을 운영하는 보딩 스쿨에서는 학생들의 독립심 형성과 인간적 성숙이라는 교육 목표를 설정하게 되므로 대학에 진학했을 때 고교 졸업 후 바로 입학하는 학생들보다 대학 문화에 대한 충격을 덜 받게 되어 성공적인 대학 생활을 영위할 수 있다.

 

따라서 PG 프로그램은 성공적인 대학 생활을 영위하기 위한 징검다리 역할을 한다고 볼 수 있다. 일부 학생들은 이미 대학 입학 허가서를 받고도 더 나은 대학에 가기 위해서 PG education을 택하기도 한다. 운동을 특기로 하는 학생들 중에는 입학허가서를 받고도 자신이 원하는 명문 대학을 입학하기 위해 일부러 PG 프로그램에 등록을 하는 경우도 있다.

피치 못하게 SAT 점수에 맞추어 원하지도 않는 대학에 입학하여 행복한 학교 생활을 하지 못하거나 적응을 못하여 도중하차 하느니, 신중하게 계획해서 시간 상 일 년이 늦어지더라도 또한 일 년의 학비를 더 지불하더라도 알찬 고등학교 프로그램을 진행하여 원하는 대학에 입학하여 행복하게 대학 생활을 할 수 있다면 고려해 봄직한 방법이다.

 

PG 지원 시 Personal Statement 신중하게 작성해야 SAT 점수도 필요
PG 프로그램에 입학하기 위한 준비는 일반적으로 보딩 스쿨에 지원하는 서류와 절차는 동일하다.

특히 왜 PG 프로그램을 선택하려는지, PG 이후의 자신의 계획은 어떤지에 대한 Personal Statement를 신중하게 작성해야 한다. 입학 원서, 지원료, 고등학교 교사, 추천서, 성적표, SAT, ACT, PSAT성적 등이 필요하고 외국인 학생의 경우 TOEFL 성적이 필요하다.
