미국 대학 지원 2017-2018 Common Application 에세이 문제 발표

 

The Common App Essay Prompts Are Changing 

필자는 NACAC (National Association for College Application Counseling)의 회원으로 정기적으로 Common Application Board에서 뉴스레터를 받아 보는데, 정리된 중요한 정보를 일반인들보다 미리 받아 보는 혜택을 누린다. 다음은 최근 Common Application Board에서 필자에게 보내 온 2017-2018년 대학 지원 정보이다.

 

미국의 학교들은 이 달말에는 거의 모든 수업과 시험을 마치고 마무리하게 되며 5월 20일을 전후로 하여 졸업식을 거행하게 된다. 6월 초부터는 거의 3개월에 걸친 긴 여름방학이 시작된다. 현재 11학년 학생들에게 5월은 아주 중요한 계절이다. 새롭게 시행되는 SAT를 쳐야 하고 매년 한 차례 진행되는 AP 시험을 쳐야 하기 때문이다. 11학년의 여름방학에는 대학 입시를 위한 본격적인 준비 작업에 돌입해야 한다.

201-2017 에세이 제목 미리 발표

Common Application에서는 2017-2018년 Essay 제목을 발표하였다. 작년과 달리 상당 부분이 달라졌다. 7개의 Prompt 중에서 변화가 없는 것은 2 문제이고 3개의 문제가 수정되어 변화가 생겼고, 2 문제는 완전 새로운 문제가 출제되었다. 각 에세이의 단어 제한은 650자 이내이다.

 

내년에 대학에 진학할 학생들이 작성해야 할 에세이의 제목은 다음과 같다. 11학년 학생들은 여름 방학이 시작되는 대로 다른 학생들 보다 일찌감치 에세이 작성 작업에 돌입하여 Head Start하는 것이 필요할 것이다.

The goal of these revisions is to help all applicants, regardless of background or access to counseling, see themselves and their stories within the prompts. They are designed to invite unencumbered discussions of character and community, identity, and aspiration. To this end, we will be creating new educational resources to help students both understand and approach the opportunities the essay presents for them.

 

2017-2018 Common Application Essay Prompts

1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story. [No change]

2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience? [Revised]

3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome? [Revised]

4. Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution. [No change]

5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others. [Revised]

6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more? [New]

7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design. [New]
