미리 보는 2016-2017 미국 대학 공용원서 (Common Application)

필자는 NACAC (National Association for College Application Counseling)의 회원으로 정기적으로 Common Application Board에서 뉴스레터를 받아 보는데, 정리된 중요한 정보를 일반인들보다 미리 받아 보는 혜택을 누린다. 다음은 최근 Common Application Board에서 필자에게 보내 온 2016-2017년 대학 지원 정보이다.

 

미국의 학교들은 이 달말에는 거의 모든 수업과 시험을 마치고 마무리하게 되며 5월 20일을 전후로 하여 졸업식을 거행하게 된다. 6월 초부터는 거의 3개월에 걸친 긴 여름방학이 시작된다. 현재 11학년 학생들에게 5월은 아주 중요한 계절이다. 새롭게 시행되는 SAT를 쳐야 하고 매년 한 차례 진행되는 AP 시험을 쳐야 하기 때문이다. 11학년의 여름방학에는 대학 입시를 위한 본격적인 준비 작업에 돌입해야 한다.

 

2016-2017 Common Application 사용 대학 48개 늘어

대부분의 미국 대학들은 Common Application을 통해 지원 서류를 받는다. 2016-2017 학년도에는 48개의 대학들이 Common Application에 가입하여 기존의 대학을 포함 무려 700여개 대학들이 Common Application을 이용하게 되었다. 새롭게 가입한 48개 대학은 미국내 22개 주, 5개의 미국 외의 국가가 포함되었다. 이들은 공립대학 11개, 사립대학 26개 그리고 외국의 대학 11개 대학이 새로운 회원 학교가 되었다.

 

2016-2017년 Common Application을 사용하게 될 대학의 리스트는 다음과 같다. 우리나라학생들이 많이 지원하고 있는 University of Wisconsin-Madison과 Indiana University-Bloomington이 포함되어 있음을 주목할 필요가 있다. 한편 아시아의 명문으로 부상하여 우리나라의 우수한 학생들이 많이 지원하고 있는 University of Hong Kong도 Common Application을 사용하기 때문에 미국 대학과 함께 University of Hong Kong을 동시에 지원하는 학생들은 홍콩대학교 지원이 조금 더 수월해 졌다고 할 수 있다. University of Warwick에서는 미국 학생들을 유치하기 위하여 Common Application을 함께 사용하기로 했으니 영국 대학을 동시에 지원할 수 있는 편리함이 생긴 것 같다.

2016-2017 에세이 제목 미리 발표

Common Application에서는 2016-2017년 Essay 제목을 발표하였다. 2016-2017 에세이는 2015-2016년 에세이 제목과 변화된 것은 없다.

 

2016년 입학을 위하여 Common Application 웹사이트를 통해 지원한 학생 수는 약 800,000명이었다. 지원 학생 중 1번 에세이 제목, 즉 Background, Identity, Interest, Talent 등에 관한 글을 선택한 학생이 가장 많았는데 전체 학생의 47%가 이 제목을 선택했다. 22% 학생이 Accomplishments에 대한 글을 적었고, 17%의 학생들이 Lesson 혹은 Failure에 관한 글을, 10%의 학생들이 문제 해결에 관해, 나머지 4% 학생이 Idea Challenged에 관한 글을 써서 제출했다.

  

내년에 대학에 진학할 학생들이 작성해야 할 에세이의 제목은 다음과 같다. 11학년 학생들은 여름 방학이 시작되는 대로 다른 학생들 보다 일찌감치 에세이 작성 작업에 돌입하여 Head Start하는 것이 필요할 것이다.

2016-2017 Essay Prompts 

1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

 2. The lessons we take from failure can be fundamental to later success. Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

3. Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?

4. Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.

5. Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community, or family.
