“우리 아이는 컴퓨터 게임에 빠져 살아요. 나중에 게임 디자이너나 하라고 해야겠어요.” 게임을 하는 자녀을 떼어 말리다가 포기하고 아예 게임 디자이너로 나서는 게 좋겠다고 생각하는 부모가 많다. 그러나 게임을 하는 것과 그 게임을 디자인하는 것은 결코 같은 분야가 아니기 때문에 게임디자인 학과를 전공한다면 꼼꼼한 검색과 신중한 선택이 필요하다.

가고싶은 대학을 생각할 때 빼놓을 수 없는게 바로 전공이다. 어떤 공부를 어디서 할지가 재정지원 내역만큼 중요하기 때문이다. 자녀가 컴퓨터게임을 좋아했다면 게임 디자인 전공도 생각해볼만하다. 최근 가장 핫한 전공으로 뜨고 있기 때문이다.

게임 디자인은 혼자서 하는 경우도 있지만, 팀을 이루어 하는 경우가 대부분이다. 게임 디자이너의 출신의 이력이나 경력, 학벌 등은 다양하다. 늘 새로운 아이디어를 떠올릴 수 있는 창의적인 능력이 있고, 기술적 측면이나 제조, 생산적인 측면에 대한 공부가 깊어 이를 이해하고 있다면 게임 디자인에 도움이 될 것이다. 디자이너는 여러가지 제약이나 한계을 이해하고 이를 감안하여 결정을 내릴 수 있어야 하기 때문에 분석적인 사고 능력이 중요하다. 즉 창조성과 꾸준한 인내심이 요구되는 직업이라고 할 수 있다.

게임 디자인

• 컨셉 디자인 - 주로 게임의 재미를 설정하는 것을 말하는데, 간혹 게임의 목적이나 제작 공정의 방향성을 설정하는 것을 말하기도 한다.
• 시스템 디자인 - 컨셉을 토대로 구조적인 설계를 하는 것을 말한다.
• 밸런스 디자인 - 말 그대로 밸런스를 맞추기 위한 기준을 설정하는 것으로, 주로 시스템 디자인에서 생성된 항목(프로그램에 사용될 각종 변수들)에 대한 상황에 맞는 적절한 수치값을 찾아내는 것을 말한다.
• 레벨 디자인 - 주로 유저의 흥미를 지속적으로 돋우고 게임에 몰입할 수 있도록 게임 속에 등장하는 배경 구조나 인공지능 오브젝트의 난이도 조절을 하는 것을 말하지만, 배경 맵 디자인과 용어를 혼용하여 사용된다.
• 인터페이스 디자인 (UI 디자인) - 게임 내의 기능 들을 유저가 이해하거나 조작하기 쉽게, 입력장치의 사용법을 정의 하거나 그래픽을 통해 시각적으로 인식 가능하게 디자인 하는 것을 말하며, 여타의 IT업종에서 사용되는 UI디자인과 의미가 같다.

Princeton Review가 최근 공개한 대학 및 대학원 순위에 따르면 University of Southern California (USC)가 컴퓨터게임 디자인 전공 대학으로 가장 우수한 것으로 조사됐다. 대학원으로는 텍사스 댈러스에 있는 Southern Methodist University (SMU)이 꼽혔다. Princeton Review는 관련 전공을 제공하는 미국내 150여 대학 중에서 프로그램과 컴퓨터 Lab 환경, 입학 조건, 재정 지원 및 졸업후 취업률 및 연봉 수준 등을 포괄적으로 조사해 순위를 매겼다고 밝혔다.

프린스턴리뷰의 로버트 프라넥 편집장은 "게임 디자인은 굉장히 재미있는 분야인데다 전 세계의 대학들이 앞다퉈 도입하고 있다"며 "학생이 필요하고 관심있어하는 분야인 만큼 관련 대학 순위를 별도로 조사했다"고 설명했다. 이번 조사에 따르면 게임디자인을 전공하는 학부생의 89%는 재학중 게임을 개발하며, 57%는 졸업전 취업하고 있다고 한다.
