미국대학 지원시 에세이 작성 요령

지원 에세이 작성을 위한 조언

 

미국 대학 입시 지원의 Regular Admission의 마감은 12월31일/ 1월1일이고 보딩 스쿨 지원은 그보다 늦은 1월15일 / 1월31일이다. 유학을 준비하고 있는 학생들은 지원 에세이 마무리 작업이 한창일 것이다. 며칠 남지 않은 기간 동안 최선을 다하여 에세이를 완성할 것을 기원하는 마음에서 에세이 작성에 도움말을 주고자 한다.

 

University of California에 속해 있는 모든 캠퍼스에서는 같은 에세이 문제를 출제한다. 다음은 UC에서 출제한 Essay Prompt이다.

All applicants must respond to two essay prompts — the general prompt and either the freshman or transfer prompt, depending on your status.

Responses to your two prompts must be a maximum of 1,000 words total.

Allocate the word count as you wish. If you choose to respond to one prompt at greater length, we suggest your shorter answer be no less than 250 words.

-      Freshman applicant prompt

Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.

 

-      Transfer applicant prompt

What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had in the field — such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities — and what you have gained from your involvement.

 

-      Prompt for all applicants

Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?

 

 

대학에 원서를 제출할 때 내신 성적이나 SAT, ACT, IB, AP 등의 표준화시험 성적은 객관적인 학업 성적이지만, 학생의 인간적인 면을 표출할 수 있는 것은 에세이와 추천서이다. 그러나 추천서는 교사나 멘토 등 타인이 작성해 주는 것이므로 내가 나를 드러낼 수 있는 것은 오직 지원 에세이뿐이다. 따라서 지원 에세이를 통해 나의 특징이나 장점을 표출하는 것이 합격의 관건이 될 수 있겠다.

 

지원 에세이는 나를 드러낼 수 있는 기회

지원 에세이는 Common Application에 Common Essay를 쓰는 것과 각 대학에서 제출한 Supplementary Essay를 작성하는 것이다. 한편 Common Application을 사용하지 않는 UC, UIUC, University of Utah 등과 같이 각 대학 고유의 원서를 작성해야 하는 경우도 있다. 그러나 각각의 에세이들은 매년 조금씩 달라지기도 하지만 거의 모든 학교가 거의 동일한 Prompt를 주고 에세이를 작성하도록 한다. 에세이를 통해 학생들의 인생관, 가치관을 보고, 그들이 무슨 생각을 하는지, 혹은 그 학생이 어떤 삶을 살아왔는지를 보고 싶어하는 것이다.

 

UC의 경우 두 개의 에세이를 작성해야 하는데, 두 에세이를 합쳐서 단어 1000개를 넘지 말아야 한다. 만약 첫 번째 에세이에서 600개 단어를 사용했다면 나머지 한 개의 에세이는 400자 내로 작성해야 하는 것이다.

 

UC 지원서의 첫 번째 Prompt는 '학생이 속해 있는 세계에 관한 이야기를 쓰라는 것이다. UC는 이 에세이를 통해 학생이 자라왔던 배경, 가정, 학교, 가족, 지역 사회 등 주위에서 지원자에게 어떤 영향을 미쳤고 그로 인해 학생의 꿈과 비전이 어떻게 형성되었는지를 보고 싶어하는 것이다.

 

두 번째 Prompt는 개인적인 성취, 재능 혹은 지원자에게 아주 중요한 개인적인 경험 등을 쓰는 것이다. 이런 성취가 왜 나를 자랑스럽게 만드는지, 이런 것들이 현재의 나와 어떤 관계가 있는 지를 써야 한다. 내가 과거에 이룬 업적이 현재의 나에게 어떤 영향을 주었는지 쓰는 것이지 단순히 업적의 나열이 되어서는 곤란하다.

 

재미있는 주제의 Prompt도 있다. University of Pennsylvania에서 제출한 문제인데 아주 영리한 주제라고 생각된다. '당신이 지금 자신의 400 페이지짜리 자서전을 쓰고 있다고 가정하고, 300페이지에 있는 이야기를 옮겨 적으라'는 거였다. 이 이야기는 내 인생의 4분의 3, 즉 가장 왕성하게 일하게 되는 50대의 비전을 적으라는 이야기다. 이때가 되면 '내가 무슨 일을 하고 있을 것'이라는 내용보다 '내가 성취한 직업 혹은 어떤 자리를 통해 이 세상과 커뮤니티에 어떤 영향력을 끼치고, 어떻게 사회에 환원하고, 사회에 이바지하는 지를 적는 것이 필요할 것이다.

임팩트 있는 에세이 작성이 관건

지원서 에세이는 자서전처럼 쓰는 것보다는 임팩트있게 내 인생의 한 사건을 조명하여 극적으로 써 내려가야 한다. 물론 문법적인 오류가 없어야 하고 품위 있는 단어를 선택하여 작성해야 한다. 그러나 일부분은 지나치게 현학적인 어떤 곳에는 너무 평상적인 단어를 선택하여 전체적인 통일성이나 일관성이 없어 보이는 것은 금물이다. 특히 외국인 학생에게서 이런 현상이 나타나는 것은 본인이 쓴 글에 영어를 잘 쓰는 사람이 손을 댄 것으로 느끼게 하는 것이기 때문에 조심해야 한다. 한편 Impact를 줄 수 있는 첫 문장이 중요하기 때문에 눈 길을 확 끌 수 있는 문장을 고심해 보는 것이 좋겠다.

 

 

University of California에서는 에세이 작성 시 주의해야 할 점을 다음과 같이 조언하고 있다.

 

[Tips and techniques]

 

-      Start early.

Allow time for reflection, thoughtful preparation and revision.

 

-      Choose a topic for both essays.

Look critically at the information in your application: your grades, awards, activities and work experience, family and income. Anticipate questions an admissions evaluator will have after reading your application. The personal statement is your opportunity to answer those questions.

 

-      Compose your personal statement in a word-processing program.

Don't type it directly into the application. This way, you will have the opportunity to print copies for review.

 

-      Write persuasively.

Present your information and ideas in a focused, deliberate and meaningful manner. Provide specific, concrete examples to support your point. A personal statement that is simply a list of qualities or accomplishments usually is not persuasive.

 

-      Proofread.

In addition to checking your spelling, be sure your grammar is correct and your essays flow smoothly.

 

-      Solicit feedback.

Your personal statement should reflect your own ideas and be written by you alone, but others — family, teachers and friends — can offer valuable suggestions. Ask advice of whomever you like, but do not plagiarize from sources in print or online and do not use anyone's published words but your own.

 

-      Copy and paste.

Once you are satisfied with your essays, save them in plain text (ASCII) and paste them into the space provided in the application. Proofread once more to make sure no odd characters or line breaks have appeared.

 

-      Relax.
