제주 국제 학교 탐구 (6)

 

North London Collegiate School (1)

 

 

NLCS(North London Collegiate School)는 제주영어교육도시 (JDC)에서 추진하는 프로젝트 중 가장 먼저, 2011년에 설립되었다. 1850년 영국 런던에 세워진 North London Collegiate School의 전통과 역사를 이어 받아 제주도 서귀포시 대정읍에 문을 열게 된 것이다.

 

NLCS 런던은 1850년 건립된 여학교

우선 NLCS Jeju를 이해하기 위해 NLCS London에 대한 언급으로 시작하겠다. Camden Town의 Buss 가문의 Frances Mary Buss에 의해 1850년 건립된 런던의 NLCS는 NLCS Jeju와는 달리 여학교이며 통학하는 Day School이다. Bernice McCabe 교장의 리더십에 따라 운영되고 있는 NLCS는 4-18세까지 여학생 1085명을 교육하고 있다.

 

NLCS 본교 학생들은 2012년 IB시험에서 45만점에 40.8점의 우수한 성적 얻어

2013년 5월 영국의 “Independent School Inspectorate”의 학교 평가에 의하면, 2012년 GCSE 시험 17과목 중 9과목에서 NLCS의 모든 학생들은 A 혹은 A^*를 받았는데 이 결과는 영국 내뿐 아니라 전 세계적으로 우수한 점수였다. 또한 2012년 IB (International Baccalaureate) 시험에서도 우수한 성적을 거두어 학생들의 평균 성적은 40.8이라는 우수한 성적을 보여 주었다. 특히 2012년 NLCS의 두 학생이 IBDP에서 45점 만점을 받아 놀라움을 자아내기도 했다.

 

NLCS는 해외 분교, 자매학교를 설립하여 교환학생 프로그램을 진행하고 있는데, 이 중 가장 비중이 큰 학교가 NLCS Jeju이다 한편 미국의 Germantown Academy와 교환교사 프로그램을 진행하고 있고, 호주 Sydney의 근교 Darlinghurst에 있는 여학교 SCEGGS와 독일의 Goethe-Gymnasium 과는 교환학생 프로그램을 운영한다. 그리고 2007년 잠비아의 Lusaka에 The Flying Angels Community School을 세워 NLCS의 학생들은 잠비아에 직접 가서 Flying School의 발전을 위한 봉사활동을 하고 있다. 이와 같이 영국의 NLCS는 우수한 학업 프로그램뿐 아니라, 글로벌 인재를 양성하기 위한 글로벌 교육 프로그램을 제공하여 엘리트 여성 육성에 교육적 목표를 지향하고 있다.

 

NLCS 제주는 10-12학년은 IGCSE, 12-13학년은 IBDP 제공

본교 NLCS의 교육철학적 이념과 역량을 바탕으로 제주도에 설립된 NLCS Jeju는 Nursery (유치원)부터 9학년까지는 영국의 교육과정을, 10-11학년에게는 IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education)를, 12-13학년에게는 IBDP (International Baccalaureate Diploma Program)을 제공한다.

 

참고로 IGCSE는 영국의 중고등 과정인 GCSE를 Cambridge 대학교에서 국제학생을 위한 국제 커리큘럼으로 개조한 것이다. IGCSE는 IB와 마찬가지로 국제적인 공인성의 교육과정이다. 현재 157개 국의 국제학교들이 채용하고 있는 교육과정으로, 9학년과 10학년 (영국 시스템 학교에서는 10-11학년)을 걸쳐 진행된다. IGCSE를 수료한 학생들은 11학년 (혹은 12학년)부터 A Level을 수료하거나, NLCS Jeju 같이 IBDP로 이행되는 학교도 있다. IGCSE는 크게 Cambridge IGCSE와 Edexcel IGCSE로 구분된다. 일부 학교들은 과학, 영어 과목을 CIE 대신 Edexcel IGCSE로 대치하는 경우도 있다.

 

NLCS 제주의 2016년 졸업생의 IB 시험의 평균점수는 38점

NLCS Jeju는 IBDP를 제공하는데, 2016년 졸업생들의 평균 점수는 38점으로 본교 학생의 점수보다는 미약하지만 IBDP를 이수한 세계 학생의 평균 점수는 훨씬 웃도는 수준이다. 전체 학생의 40%가 최고 수준의 점수대인 40점을 취득했으며, 73.4%의 학생이 각 과목별 최고 점수인 6-7점을 달성했다.

 

다음은 학교에서 발표한 2016년 NLCS Jeju 졸업생들의 대학 진학 리스트이다. NLCS는 신생 학교이기 때문에 많은 학부모들이 과연 졸업생들이 어느 학교에 진학했는지에 최대 관심을 두고 있는데 아래 학교 리스트는 학부모들의 궁금증을 해소할 수 있을 것이다.

 

아래 리스트를 보면 NLCS는 영국 교육과정을 제공하는 학교이기 때문에 영국의 명문 학교에 진학하는 학생이 많은 것을 알 수 있다. Cambridge를 비롯하여 Imperial College, LSE, UCL, KCL과 Warwick, Endinburgh, St. Andrews 등의 명문 대학은 물론 Surrey, Manchester, Nottingham, EEXETE, Glasgow, Sheffield, Durham 등의 영국 대학에 진학한 학생들이 많았다. 미국 대학은 Rice, Duke, Emory, CMU, NYU 등의 학교에 진학한 것이 눈에 뜨였고 UC 계열 대학은 비교적 많은 학생들이 진학했다. RISD, Savannah, Art Institute of Chicago 등의 미술대학에 합격한 학생들도 있다. 아시아 지역으로는 다수의 학생들이 홍콩대, 홍콩과기대, 홍콩중문대와 싱가폴에 있는 싱가폴 국립대/Yale 대 연계 프로그램에 진학한 것도 주목할 만하다. 특히 서울대, 부산대, 성균관대, 연세대 등 한국 대학에도 진학했다.

 

NLCS의 제주에서는 미국 대학보다는 영국 대학 입학이 강한 것을 알 수 있다. Cambridge를 비롯하여 영국의 최고 명문인 Imperial College London, University College London, London School of Economics and Political Science에 많은 학생이 진학한 것은 영국 대학에 강한 학교임을 보여 준다. 그러나 미국 대학은 Rice, Duke, CMU, Emory 등에 합격했지만 Ivy League에 입학한 학생이 없음은 아쉬운 점이다. 그리고 아시아권의 명문 대학에 선호함을 보여 주었지만 한국사와 한국어 수업을 제공하여 한국 대학을 장려함에도 불구하고 서울대 2명을 비롯하여 단지 8명 정도가 국내 대학에 입학한 것 또한 아쉬운 점이라고 할 수 있다.
