IS의 참수(斬首)와 Kimball Union Academy

 

 

극단적인 이슬람 수니파 무장단체 '이슬람국가'(IS)가 4 번째 참수 살해 보복으로 영국인 인질 앨런 헤닝(47)의 참수 동영상을 공개했다고 한다. IS가 다른 인질을 참수할 때 썼던 것과 같은 방식으로, IS 대원이 인질로 억류 중인 다른 미국인도 살해하겠다고 위협하는 장면으로 끝난다고 한다. 미국이 이라크, 시리아의 IS 공습을 개시한 이후 미국인 기자 제임스 폴리와 스티븐 소트로프, 영국인 구호단체 직원 데이비드 헤인즈에 이어 IS가 인질 참수 장면을 인터넷을 통해 공개한 4번째 사례가 된다. 구명운동에도 불구하고 참수를 단행한 IS의 잔혹성과 야만성에 분노하지 않을 수 없다.

KUA의 졸업생 Steven Sotloff, IS에 희생

필자가 IS의 참수에 관심을 가졌던 이유는 미국의 명문 보딩 스쿨인 Kimball Union Academy의 교장 선생님으로부터 이메일 한 통 때문이었다.

Dear Kimball Union family and friends,

 

Last week in the midst of an unimaginably challenging time for Steven’ Sotloff’s family, I received a phone message from his father, Arthur, with some remarkable news. Steven was able to have several letters smuggled out of his place of captivity late last spring. In one of those correspondences to his family, he wrote that he would like a scholarship fund established at Kimball Union in his name should he not survive. His father told us how grateful they all were for the opportunities he had here, and how much our school meant to him and to them.

 

I am honored to announce the establishment of the Steven J. Sotloff Fund to Inspire Journalism and Global Scholarship. Through its creation, the family’s hope is to promote and inspire future generations of Kimball Union students to follow Steven’s passion for global and cultural awareness and journalism. Even in the face of danger, Steven’s courage and desire to tell the world about the plight of the voiceless was nothing short of remarkable. The Fund will enable students to reach beyond their grasp, see the world through different lenses, and commit to using what they learn at KUA to help others and to make the world a better place.

 

A few hours ago, we held a press conference in response to the many requests we had received to learn more about Steven during his time here and to announce this tribute to him. I spoke about some of my correspondences and interactions with Steven and how I had come to know him in recent years. David Weidman, Assistant Head for Academic Affairs, shared not only his own recollections but also a touching and poignant compilation of memories and sentiments from current and past faculty and Steven’s classmates and friends. Links to these remarks are included below.

 

So many members of the Kimball Union family and friends have reached out from across the country and all corners of the globe to inquire about how to pay tribute to Steven. We are compiling the memories, stories, and condolences that you have shared to send to his family. The Steven J. Sotloff Fund to Inspire Journalism and Global Scholarship provides us with another avenue to ensure his legacy.

Steven Sotloff는 Kimball Union Academy를 졸업한 후, 프리랜서 기자로 ‘타임’, ‘크리스천 사이언스 모니터’, ‘월드 어페어스 저널’, ‘포린 폴리시 매거진’ 등 여러 언론매체를 위해 일하던 중 작년 8월에 시리아에서 IS에 납치되었다 지난 달 9월 초 참수당했다.

 

이라크 수니파 반군 '이슬람국가(IS)‘에 참수당한 Steven의 부모는 참혹하게 아들을 잃은 슬픔 속에서도 의연함을 잃지 않았다. 아들들의 죽음이 선의와 평화로 승화되기를 간절히 희망했다. Steven은 영웅은 아니지만 어둠의 세계에서 감춰진 선을 찾아내고 아랍 지역에서 고통받고 있는 약자들의 목소리를 서방 세계에 알리려 노력했다고 말했다. 아들의 죽음이 고통스럽지만 시련을 이겨낼 것이라면서, 아들의 모교인 Kimball Union Academy에 “The Stenen L. Sotloff Fund to Inspire Journalism and Global Scholarship”을 설립하겠다고 했다.

 

Steven의 부모는 KUA에 장학금 기탁

졸업생의 안타까운 죽음과 그의 부모로부터 장학금 전달은 받은 Kimball Union Academy의 교장선생님 Michael l. Schafer로부터의 편지는 읽는 사람들의 가슴을 뭉클하게 만들었다.

 

소신껏 옳은 일을 하다가 끔찍한 일을 당한 Steven에 대한 생각에 가슴이 먹먹해졌고 아들을 잃은 단장의 아픔을 겪고 있는 와중에도 아들의 희생을 승화시키고 있는 그의 부모에 대한 생각으로 숙연해졌다. 한편으로는 자식을 잃은 아픔에 경중이 있을 수 없지만, 예기치 못한 사고로 운명을 달리한 사건과 진실을 보도하기 위해 적진에 들어가 용감한 취재 활동을 하다가 참수된 희생자로서의 Steven 부모와 우리나라 세월호 희생자 가족들과 대비되어 더욱 더 Steven의 부모에 대한 존경심과 경외심이 생겨났다.

 

필자와 자주 연락을 하고 지내는 Kimball Union Academy의 Senior Associate Director of Admission 인 Lindsey Ratliff는 결혼 전 Wolfe의 이름을 Ratliff로 바꿨다. KUA에 대한 간단한 소개를 해 보기로 한다.
