인성교육과 대학 지원 에세이

최근 정규 학교를 다니지 않고 부모와 Homeschooling을 하면서 고등학교 과정을 마친 학생을 상담했었다. 이 학생이 미국의 4년제 대학교에 지원하는 데는 어려운 점이 무척 많다. 제도권 학교를 다닌 학생에게 당연히 제공되는 School Profile, Transcripts, Recommendation 등에 관련하여 이를 어떻게 해결할 것인가가 큰 문제이다. 그러나 이 학생은 서울의 강남의 학교에 다녔다면, 잃어 버릴 수 있었을 지도 모르는 창의력, 상상력, 남에 대한 배려, 평화로운 마음, 이타적인 사고 등의 특징을 그대로 간직하고 있었다. 이 학생이 자신을 돋보일 수 있는 것은 지원 에세이나 인터뷰를 통해서가 유일하다고 할 수 밖에 없다. 그러나 인터뷰는 모든 학교에 전부 해야 하는 과정은 아니기 때문에 지원 에세이에 심혈을 기울여야 한다.

 

미국 대학교 공통지원서인 Common Application에는 7개의 다른 에세이 주제가 제시되어 있고, UC지원서 에세이에서는 8개의 주제를 제시하고 있다. Common App에서는 이 중에서 하나의 주제를 선택해 쓰면 되고, UC의 지원서는 4개의 에세이를 골라 작성해야 한다. 에세이 Prompts는 크게 어려운 주제는 아니지만, 막상 글을 써야 할 때 많은 학생들이 주저할 수 밖에 없다. 자신을 잘 드러낼 수 있는 주제를 고르는 것이 물론 가장 중요하다는 것은 누구나 알고 있지만 쉽지 않은 선택이다.

 

미국에서는 유수한 대학들이 입학심사시 지원자들의 캐릭터에 대한 점수를 적용하고 있다는 것은 주지의 사실이다. 그러면 Character란 무엇일까?

 

언급하고 있는 Character의 의미는 학생의 타고난 성격과는 다른 뜻이다. ‘남을 배려하는가’, ‘감사하는가’, 용서할 수 있는가’, 다른 사람을 기껏이 도와줄 수 있는가’, ‘건전한 시민으로 살아 갈 수 있는가’, 지역사회에 공헌할 수 있는가’, 법이나 규칙을 준수할 수 있는가’, 권위에 순응하는가’, ‘개방적이고 융통성 있는 마음의 자세를 가지고 있는가’, 타인의 말을 경청할 수 있는가’, 타인의 탓으로 돌리지 않는가’, 다름에 대한 관용적인 태도를 보이는가’, 타인에 대하여 적절한 언어를 사용하고 적절한 자세를 유지하는가’, ‘분모, 모욕, 의견충돌에 적절하게 대응할 수 있는가’, 정직한가’, ‘말과 행동은 일치하는가’, ‘좋은 평판을 지니려고 노력하는가’, 가족, 친구, 나라에 충성하는가’, '어려움을 극복하고 일어설 수 있는 힘을 가지고 있는가' '여러 사람과 잘 어울릴 수 있는가' '여러 사람이 반대를 표하더라도 자신이 신념을 믿고 뜻을 굽히지 않을 수 있는가' '책임감이 있는가' '어떠한 환경에도 적응할 수 있는 적응성이 있는가' 등이 대표적인 캐릭터라고 볼 수 있다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Six Attributes of Character  The Six Pillars of the Character Counts youth-ethics initiative.   Caring - Kind, compassionate behavior, expressing gratitude, forgiving others, and helping people in need. Citizenship - Helping to make school and community better, staying informed, obeying rules and laws, respecting authority, and protecting the environment. Fairness - Playing by the rules, taking turns and sharing, being open-minded, listening to others, not taking advantage of others, and not blaming others. Respect - Being tolerant of differences, using good manners and appropriate language, not threatening, hitting, or hurting anyone, and dealing peacefully with anger, insults, and disagreements. Responsibility - Doing what one is supposed to do, persevering, doing one's best, maintaining self-control, thinking before acting, and being accountable for one's choices. Trustworthiness - Being honest, doing what you say you'll do, doing the right thing, building a good reputation, being loyal to family, friends, and country, and not deceiving, cheating, or stealing.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

지원자 Character의 특징을 찾아내기 위해서는 현재 미 전국의 거의 모든 대학에서 사용하고 있는 입학사정 방식이 전인적 평가 (Holistic Reviewㆍ전체적 심사)이다. 즉 학생의 교내 성적GPA나 SAT, ACT 표준화 시험 성적만 보는 것이 아니라 학생의 가정환경, 출신학교, 과외활동, 교사의 추천서, 본인이 쓴 에세이를 평가하여 Whole Person인 학생의 모습을 심사하여 합격을 판정한다는 것이다.

 

2016년 오하이오 컬럼버스에서 Character조합연구소라는 비영리단체를 만들었다. 이 단체에는 버크넬 대학, 시카고대학, 콜게이트대학, 코넬대학, 덴버주립대, 조지아텍, MIT, 노터데임, 오리건 주립대, 로체스터대, 스와스모어, 하버드, 유펜 등의 대학과 ACT 까지 합세하여 입학 사정 시 Holistic Review에 해야 함에 대하여 뜻을 같이 했다. 위에 언급한 학교는 다른 학교보다 Character Building에 더 많은 주의를 기울있다고 볼 수 있다.

 

 

 

 

 

작년부터 미국 대학 사회와 SAT College Board에서는 심지어 SAT 시험 점수에 역경점수 (Adversity Score)를 반영하여 어려운 환경의 학생과 풍요로운 환경에서 다양한 교육을 접했던 학생에게 다른 평가의 잣대를 들이대어야 한다는 주장까지 나오게 되었다. 그러나 SAT 문제에서는 갑논을박이 급등하여 역경점수 도입은 유예되었다.

11학년 학생들은 이번 봄 AP, SAT, ACT 표준화시험을 마치고, 학교 리스트를 결정하며 에세이 작업에 돌입하게 될 것이다. Common App 혹은 UC 지원서에서 지원 에세이를 쓸 때 가장 중요한 것은 학생의 긍정적인 부분을 가장 잘 보여줄 수 있는 주제를 일단 찾으라는 것이다. 단체의 회장이나 창립자, 리더십 포지션을 갖고 있으며 책임감을 보여주고 있는 스토리를 담아내는 것이 중요하다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Common Application Personal Essay    The essay demonstrates your ability to write clearly and concisely on a selected topic and helps you distinguish yourself in your own voice. What do you want the readers of your application to know about you apart from courses, grades, and test scores? Choose the option that best helps you answer that question and write an essay of no more than 650 words, using the prompt to inspire and structure your response. Remember: 650 words is your limit, not your goal. Use the full range if you need it, but don't feel obligated to do so. (The application won't accept a response shorter than 250 words.)   ● Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it.
