CASE STUDY 1: Jude Choi
Vignette (4)
1. Jude’s mom and grandma visited me to have a consultation regarding junior boarding schools in the US for Jude, who is 11 years old. Jude’s mom got divorced and remarried. As she is busy as a medical practitioner, his grandma has been taking care of him since he was born. He has a strong attachment relationship with his grandparents.
2. Jude is familiar with American schools because he attends Korea International School which offers American curriculum and teaches in English. His English proficiency is superior to any other Korean kid, but he doesn’t speak as perfect English because he just uses English at school. He is highly intelligent and good at Math and Science.
3. He is introverted, so he likes to be alone, listening to music and playing with Lego. He learned to play the piano and the clarinet. He learns to swim and to play golf and soccer. But he doesn’t like strenuous team sports. Recently he absorbs in computer games, so his mom is worried about his single-mindedness.
4. Jude’s mom graduated from Cheshire Academy and Washington University in St. Louis. She knows well about the education systems both in the US and Korea and especially the benefits from the boarding schools. She thinks that if Jude goes to a boarding school as early as possible, he will be able to pick up a perfect English and enhance the chance to get into a prestigious senior boarding school and Ivy League as well.
Question 1 (4)
1. He feels ill at ease with his step-father and step-grandparents. An important factor to consider is that the reason why his mom decides to send him to a boarding school has nothing to do with his step-father nor step-grandparents. His mom should make him understand that she wants to give him a better educational environment.
2. His grandma is inclined to overprotect Jude because she feels a lot of sympathy for him. It is important to make him independent, responsible, and motivated. At the same time, the school should offer a family-like, welcoming atmosphere and take good care of him so that he feels stable and amicable emotionally and physically.
3. Since he lives with his grandparents, he seldom getts along with his peer group. It is import to provide him with a community atmosphere which encourages him sociable, adventurous, and a bit outgoing.
4. Since his language skills are not perfect yet, they need ESL (ELL) class. His mom wants him to experience various kinds of sports to find his favourite one because he doesn’t like to play sports. They want an excellent secondary school counseling program so that it will enable Jude to prepare for selective high schools.
Question 2
I recommended that Jude should apply for prestigious junior boarding schools as a 5th grader. But I ruled out Fay School, Fessenden School, Indian Mountain School, Eagle Brook School, Cardigan Mountain School and Hillside School because most of the schools don’t accept grade 5 students and his mother doesn’t want single-sex schools.
(1) The Bement School
The Bement School in historic Deerfield, MA provides an authentic American experience for international students (Co-ed/ Boarding Grades 3-9). The Bement introduces International boarding students to new activities, and they can make close friendships with their American peers, who host them in their homes on weekends and during mini-breaks.
1) English Language Learning (ELL)
All international students should join ELL program, while they take mainstram classes with their American peers. The program consists of literature-discussion circles, research presentations, essessay writing related to their classroom texts, especially cultural understanding.
2) Mini-Term
The Bement Mini-Term is between after Thanksgiving and before winter break. Students can choose a theme of the year and carry on special curricula, activities, field trips, and other experiences.
