Question 3

1. International students who apply for junior boarding schools should start the application process earlier than the US domestic students even though the schools adopt the rolling admission. Application due to International Students is December 15, and the Decision Notifications is January 15.

2. Rumsey Hall School currently accepts Grade 6-9th for a boarder. If Jude wants to go to Rumsey Hall as a 5th grader, we should contact the admissions office about the possibility to accept him as a 5th grade-boarder. Until the last few years, Rumsey Hall accepted Grade 5 Korean students. We had better discuss with Matthrew Hoeniger who is now Headmaster and former Director of Admission because he had a lot of experiences to handle Korean applicants.

3. Since Jude’s mom got divorced, Jude has received a psychological therapy regularly. He drew a picture during the session. In the picture, his mom, step-father, and Jude are on a huge boat while his father is on a tiny boat far away from them. We guess Jude might have a guilty feeling or a sentiment of sympathy for his father. We should encourage him to create a sound relationships with his family members, friends, and adults.

4. As Jude is still young, dependent, and shy, Jude’s mom was not sure whether Jude could adjust himself to a new environment or not so she hesitated to make a decision. send him to study abroad. Thus, I recommended that Jude’s family should take time to visit a school. They should take a look at campus facilities, dorm, dining hall, laundry, curriculum, extra activities, sports center and even surrounding areas of the school. They should talk with the faculty members and current students or their families. This campus visit can give them a big picture of Jude’s further education.

5. Boarding schools have long-weekends, Thanksgiving, Christmans, Easter, and Summer vacations. Most of the schools close dormitories and students are supposed to leave dorm. Parents need to find a local guardian to take care of their child or ask a school to offer a special care. If a school doesn’t give a pick-up or drop-off service at an airport, parents should make an arrangement for transportation in advance.

6. In spite of his high IQ and good grades, his study skills and motivation are not fully developed yet. So he needs to identify his goals and to receive academic assistance and guidance for skill instructions: time management, IT management, note-taking skill, test-taking strategy, writing skill, presentation skill, and so on.
