Answer 2-1

Davidson College

 

Davidson College will be the right match school for Peter, who might want to be a physician, because Davidson offers not only rigorous science majors (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) but unique Interdisciplinary studies, Neuroscience, Pre-med, Pre-Vet though. It’s worth a try because Peter’s score is 1420, while the accepted students’ SAT range is 1300-1450, though the college is competitive with less than 20% of the general acceptance rate.

 

Davidson College is situated in a suburban area of Charlotte, North Carolina, where there are a variety of ways of social and cultural activities for Peter to get involved.

 

Since he experienced participating in a research project during the high school year, he might have an interest in the research project. Davidson encourages students to explore their interests until they declare a major by the end of their sophomore year and to join an extensive exploration of science projects, integrating research projects and scholarships. An academic advisor who is an important resource for providing information about academics, standards of progress, graduation requirements, and career consultation will be a great help because Peter still has an uncertain idea of his ultimate career. Most of the first-year students live at residence halls on campus. Peter can feel a sense of fellowship and solidarity. I recommend Grinnell College because they provide top-notch academic programs and a wide range of activities as well, and the campus is fairly diverse in terms of its student population, and I don’t feel like dealing with the east coast pretentiousness. Though Grinnell is not in a big city and people say their humanities programs are strong, not science, Grinnell might be Peter’s place because of their solid Biology, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology programs. His application for admission would be meaningful as Peter’s academic record could be satisfied with their criteria, though their acceptance rate is less than 30%.

 

Their campus is in a rural area which Peter might not like, but it has a super modern student center, state-of-the-academic complex and athletic facilities, including a golf course.

 

At Grinnell, students are encouraged to take the initiative and responsibility for their studies and to get non-credit subject assistance programs if students need academic help. There are no large lectures that generally take place at large research universities in the US. Thus, Peter will be able to gain significant academic achievements in this educational environment. Freshmen should have a tutorial program and a mentor relationship with their professors until they declare a major. Peter needs a tutor’s holistic guidance regarding personal knowledge of his academic interests, aptitudes, and needs because his eventual goals or career has not been created yet.

 

More than half of the Grinnell students participate in a global learning program to study abroad worldwide and learn many languages so that they can gain experience, knowledge, and intercultural and social skills. This program will make Peter, who has many traveling experiences, more enhanced his global perspective.

 

Grinnell offers many kinds of internships. An internship is important for Peter because it will help him improve his conditions and confidence, create ideal networks, and gain a chance to apply the theory to the real world. Besides, it will enhance his possibility of getting into a graduate school with a wonderful portfolio.

 

There is no fraternity or sorority in Grinnell but their social life at Grinnell is great. Parties are very calm and controlled, everyone is respectful of each other, and the campus feels safe. Students can choose a club or social activity from over 100 groups such as general activities, athletics, multicultural, performance, politics, and social justice. Peter can continue the student council and community service activity at Grinnell.

 

All the freshmen live in a residence hall on campus, so they are not only provided a safe and comfortable living space but also fostered a sense of community. Within this residence system, Peter can learn how to self-control and to cooperate with peers. If he participates in volunteer roles of peer advisor or residence hall manager, which he might be interested in, his leadership and communicative skills will be brushed up. I recommend the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, UK, because Peter is open to a wide variety of options in selecting colleges, and even he is interested in foreign universities.

 

Established in the 1400s, University of St. Andrews in the UK is a public research university, but it is a bit similar to American liberal arts college. There are connections between St Andrews and the US high society. Most major cities in the US have St. Andrews alumni clubs and the largest one is in New York. Peter will adapt to a new UK environment easily because approximately one thrid of the student population comes from overseas and he doesn’t have a language barrier at all.

 

St Andrews is known worldwide as the "home of golf," and the famous St Andrews golf course is the most frequent venue for “The Open Championship.” And the beach in St Andrews was used as a location for the film “Chariots of Fire.” St. Andrews is a small town, but Peter can feel a sense of big cities because of travelers’ world destination of choice.

 

Undergraduate degrees, which are different from those of any other UK university (3 years), are usually studied full-time for four years. They offer very strong science programs, especially Biology: Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Marine Biology, Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, and so on. Peter will have the benefits of in-depth Biology programs. The strong program offered by a prestigious UK university can be a benefit to get into a graduate or professional school in the US.

 

Peter has some advantages of his academic condition to apply for St. Andrews. International students may apply for St. Andrews via the US Common Application. He doesn’t need to spend more time and effort to complete St. Andrews’ or UCAS application forms.

 

If International students apply for UK universities, they should sit for A-Level tests or take 2-year IBDP or the 1-year UK Foundation program.
