Q3. List any other points that should possibly be considered in working with Peter and/or his parents.
Answer 3
1. Considering Peter’s Major and Career
One of the important elements of personal happiness is being passionate about a career. Yet, Peter doesn’t know how much he learns about himself and his preferences. I recommend that he should use the psychological testings for his self-discovery and self-analysis.
①Sequoia Integrated Psychological Test (SIPT)
Sequoia Group where I have been playing a major role in psychological consultation collaborated with Yonwoo Psychological Institute in Korea to create SIPT to measure students’ mental, temperamental, behavioral, and emotional traits and to evaluate their interests and aptitudes. The SIPT is designed to give students some insights into their personality and highlight some of their interests and strengths to decide major or career.
②Personality and Type Indicators: MBTI / Keirsey Temperament Sorter
③Interest Inventories: Strong Interest Inventory / MAPP
2 Thoughts about Personal Statement
Peter wrote an impressive essay, but not superlative. In order to produce an outstanding essay, Peter needs to look in the mirror and prepare to talk about what he sees. What he sees is what the college wants to know about him. They want to know what makes Peter, himself, who he is, how he views himself, and what he wants to be. Peter might feel difficult to write about himself without reflection and introspection. However, the above mentioned psychological testings will enable him to meet his authentic ego. He can keep track of thoughts and aspirations in which he finds himself articulating strong opinions. I recommend that he should take psychological testings for exploration of himself and essay writing as well.
3.City Campus vs Rural Campus
Peter prefers a city campus. But a potential drawback is that urban colleges sometimes lack the close-knit campus culture. While activities on rural campuses are often the center of the school’s social scene, the off-campus events can instead be a center stage in a big city. And with too much independence or freedom and many entertainment options, life in a big city can be distracting for newcomers. He would rather look upon suburban campuses as an alternative option since there are not many liberal arts colleges located in urban areas. There is no right answer when it comes to urban, suburban, or rural campuses, but it’s all about Peter’s personal preferences. It’s important for Peter to think about which environment will give him access to the entertainment, opportunities, and overall atmosphere he prefers. The college will be his home for the next four years. The city or town where he chooses to settle should provide him with connections, internship opportunities, and possibly his guidance options.
4.Ideas for Peter to be a Strong Candidate
Peter has been doing well for college preparation, but I would like to add some advice during his senior year so that he will become an aspiring and competent candidate for a prestigious university or medical school.
①Enter a science fair.
Example: Google Science Fair, Intel, National Science Bowl, National Olympiad, International Biogeneius Challenge, Regeneron Science Talent Search
②Participate in a summer research program
Example: IGNITE, High School Research Review at University of Utah
③Include an abstract of your scientific research with his application.
④Volunteer at the local hospital or science lab.
⑤Become a summer volunteer with a medical or scientific program abroad.
Example: Rustic Pathways, Global Public Service Academies
Summer Springboard & Global Leadership Adventures
⑥Apply for a summer science or medical study program.
Example: Duke University’s TIP, Oxford Royal Academy, Cambridge Immerse
⑦Conduct a summer job or an internship at a university lab, pharma company, engineering firm, and etc.
⑧Get a scientific mentor.
5.Various Kinds of Options for Medical Schools to Reconsider
If his ultimate career is decided as a physician via an aptitude test and sirous self-exam, he can contemplate many options for going directly to a medical school: Provisional Admission Program, Accelerated Medical Program, BA/BS+MD Program, and even Professional Medical School overseas.
①Boston University, Boston, USA
BU offers various options for medical professionals: Pre-professional Advisory Program, Fast Track Provisional Admission, 7 Year Accelerated Medical Program, and Modular Medical Integrated Curriculum.
②Drexel University, Philadelphia, USA
BA/BS+MD program: A 4+4 combined program that allows students to gain early acceptance into both their undergraduate program and medical school at the same time.
③Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Rome, Italy
A 6-ear medical school whose teaching medium is English: the curriculum is designed to help students prepare for the USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 so students can practice in the US after graduation.
④St. George’s University of London, UK
A 5-ear UK medicine program provides primary medical qualification, which entitles to provisional registration with the general medical council in the UK.
⑤St. George’s University School of Medicine, Grenada, West Indies
SGU offers medical and veterinary medical degrees that are accredited and approved by many governing authorities, and affiliated with educational institutions worldwide. SGU graduates have gained registration with medical licensing authorities in many countries, including the US (but excluding South Korea). The 7-year MD Program is designed for high school graduates who need to study a complete course from the foundation sciences to the medical degree program.
6.Anything Else
Every university has a different application requirements, procedure, and deadline, so he should be careful to submit the application.
The earliest deadline is October 15 of the UK medical schools. Peter’s academic abilities will be satisfied with St. George’s admission criteria: high school diploma with an average of 85%, with Math, English, Biology and Chemistry and at least 4 APs at grades 5,5,5,4, to include Chemistry and Biology. If he meets these conditions, he will be accepted.
Applicants for Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore should sit for the entrance exam at the end of February. The test, which consists of multiple-choice questions, is easier than MCAT, UKCAT or BMAT. They evaluate general knowledge about specific subjects, common sense, and how quickly they respond and adapt. The program has a maximum capacity of 50 places divided as 20 seats reserved for Italian and E.U. students and 30 seats reserved for non-EU students. That means non-EU students can get into college easier than EU students because of less competition.
Peter can apply to St. George’s University as “insurance”, his safety school even after he gets the results from the US universities because SGU adapts a rolling admission. If Peter applies for the 7-year MD program, he doesn’t need to take the MCAT or medical school exams and can use AMCAS application forms. He is a strong applicant with a secondary school diploma, an excellent GPA, and AP credits.
If Peter applies for overseas medical schools, he can save time and money, though currently, he doesn’t require a focus on pre-med or medical school. Their tuition would be a range of $20,000 to $44,000 per year. The duration of their programs is 5-7 years. I recommend he should reconsider various options, not just liberal arts colleges in the US.
