Leader란 조직 내에서 목표를 설정하고 그 목표를 향해 조직을 이끌어 가기 위해 구체적인 동기를 유발시키고 미래의 Vision을 향해 조직을 이끌어 가는 역량을 갖춘 사람이다. 미국 내 있는 우수 명문 대학에서는 입학 사정 시 Leadership을 가진 학생을 선발하려고 한다.

명문 대학에서는 졸업생들이 각 분야의 리더로 성장할 것을 원해

그렇다면 왜 명문 대학에서는 Leadership을 중요하게 여길까? 명문 대학에서는 졸업생들이 미국뿐 아니라 전 세계에 진출하여 각 분야의 리더로 성장하여 미국 국내 및 전 세계에서 적극적으로 활동하기를 바라기 때문이다. 따라서 미국의 명문 대학들은 학생들의 잠재되어 있는 리더로써의 자질을 찾아 합격 여부를 결정하게 된다. 그러므로 대학에서는 스포츠 팀이나 클럽 활동에서 그리고 학교 운영 조직원으로써 두각을 나타냈던 학생을 선호 하며 하게 되는데, 그런 학생들이 일반 학생들보다 주인 의식이 강하고 희생할 줄 알며 미래의 리더로써 자질이 있다고 판단하기 때문이다. 이런 이유로 Leadership 교육은 무척 중요하다고 할 수 있다.

 

명문대 입학을 위해 리더십 캠프 중요해
발 빠른 부모들은 5월에 접어 들면서 자녀들의 여름 방학을 준비하게 되는데, 방학 동안 학생들이 참여하여 뜻있게 시간을 보낼 수 있는 Leadership Program 프로그램을 소개해 보려고 한다.

 

㈜ 세쿼이아 그룹에서 2013년 여름 방학을 위해 기획한 프로그램으로 미국 전체 캠프 순위 10위, 펜실베니아 주 캠프 순위 1위를 차지하고 있는 The Longacre Leadership Program이다.

세쿼이아에서는 올 여름 서머 리더십 프로그램 기획

The Longacre Foundation은 Pennsylvania 주 헌법에 따른 The Foundation for Enhancing Communities (TFEC)에 의해 1920년에 설립된 비영리 단체이다. $50M의 자산을 가진 The Longacre Foundation에서는 39년 전부터 청소년을 위한 Leadership Camp를 운영해 왔다.

 

만 12-18세까지 남녀 학생이 참가할 수 있는데, 기간은 2013년 7월27일부터 2013년 8월10일까지 2주간으로, 미국의 펜실베니아 주 뉴포트 (New Port)의 The Longacre Foundation의 Ranch에서 진행된다.

학생들이 선택할 수 있는 특별활동의 종류가 무척 다양한데, 참가할 수 있는 Activities는 다음과 같다.

리더십 프로그램이기 때문에 학생들은 여러 가지 봉사활동에 참여하는데 제공되고 있는 봉사활동은 다음과 같다.

 

Recycling Center

In Perry County, recycling is done by township. Once a month, volunteers descend upon the township building to receive and sort the recycling that comes in. Over the summer, you and your Longacre team will bounce from township to township, giving a burst of energy to volunteers who have been doing this for years. You will unload the cars and sort the bags. And you will learn one of the secret pleasures of recycling: hearing glass jars shatter after you toss them into the bins.

 

Food Bank

At the food bank, the work isn’t that hard — you will just be sorting food, greeting clients, and distributing boxes — but it’s still a challenge: you will encounter people whose lives are difficult in a lot of ways. You treat them with compassion and respect, and at the end of the day, perhaps, you will have a new perspective on the blessings in your life.

 

Nursing Home

Our local nursing home is the Manor at Perry Village. We go to the nursing home to cheer up the residents, and they love seeing us. Our activities there vary, but they include performing theater productions, playing board games, and planting flowers in their flower boxes.

CATRA

CATRA (Capital Area Therapeutic Riding Association) is a wonderful organization that works with people with disabilities through therapeutic horseback riding. You will support CATRA in its operations, during lessons, cleaning stalls and mowing lawns.

 

Animal Rescue

A few years ago, our neighbors started the Perry County Animal Rescue. They are now overwhelmed with work and need your help.

You will walk the dogs, play with the cats and clean out the pens. Note: All animal rescue volunteers must be at least 16 years old.

 

Non-Profit Organizations

Susan’s husband (and Matt’s father) Roger is the executive director of the Perry County Council of the Arts (PCCA), a local non-profit. Roger is always grateful for volunteers who help with the organization’s work. This includes cataloguing donated artwork, stuffing envelopes for mass mailings, preparing the gallery for art openings, and landscaping around the museum.

 

Theater Productions

Each summer, we put on two theater productions for local children. These productions take about 25 hours to prepare, and you will get community service credit for all of those hours. We perform the productions once for Longacre, once for local children, and once for the residents of the nursing home.

Landscaping

There are two local non-profits that do landscaping and beautification in our community: Millerstown Community Success (MCS) and Newport Revitalization and Preservation Society (NRPS). Last year, a reporter wrote about us volunteering with MCS and we landed on the front page in the newspaper!

 

Perry Day Camp

For two weeks every summer summer, local volunteers put on a day camp for local children. The day camp takes place at Little Buffalo State Park, just down the road. Along with Longacre staff and friends, you will teach the kids about the environment, take a creek walk, or play games like bean bag toss or duck-duck-goose. The kids love it because you’re a bundle of fresh energy. The volunteers love it because they’re harried and you’re reliable, and they get to hand over responsibility for a few hours.

 

Knitting

Did you know you can get community service hours for knitting? No joke. You’ll hook up with local and international organizations that distribute sweaters, dolls and bears to needy children.
