8월 1일 미국 대학 입시 공용원서 오픈

 

2020년 8월 1일 오늘 2021-2022 학년도 미국대학 입시 공용원서(Common Application: www.commonapp.org)가 오픈되었다. Common Application이란 미국뿐 아니라 일부 외국 대학에 지원할 때도 사용할 수 있는 온라인 지원서를 말한다. 약 40년 전에 15개 대학이 모여 공용원서를 사용하자고 합의한 이래 올해는 무려 885개 대학에서 Common App을 채택했고, 약 백만 명의 전 세계학생들이 Common App을 사용하고 있다.

                                                                                                       

Common App은 미국 대학교만 사용하는 것이 아니다. 우리나라 연세대학교의 Underwood 국제학부를 지원할 때, 세쿼이아 그룹이 한국의 입학사무처 역할을 수행하고 있는 미국의 미시간대학교와 중국 상해교통대학교의 Joint Institute와 이탈리아의 The American University of Rome에 지원할 때도 Common App을 이용할 수 있다.

Common App을 작성할 때 가장 신경이 쓰이는 것이 지원 에세이를 작성하는 것이다.

Common App에는 3가지 종류의 에세이를 작성해야 한다.

 

① Common App Personal Essay

공용원서의 “Common App” 섹션에 출제된 것으로 지원자는 특정 대학과 상관 없이 이곳에 에세이를 작성해야 한다.

 

② College-specific questions

대부분의 대학은 각자 대학에서 출제한 단답형의 질문이나 에세이 제목을 준다.

 

③ Writing supplements

모든 대학에 Sumpplement를 제출해야 하는 것은 아니지만, 대학 나름의 보충 에세이를 작성해야 한다. 지원 대학에 Supplement가 있는지 확인하려면 Dashboard 혹은 My College Tab을 사용하면 된다.

 

 

다음은 오늘 발표된 Common Application에서 출제한 에세이 제목이다. 2019-2020년 제목과 달라진 것이 없다.

 

1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, please share your story.

 

2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

 

3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?

 

4. Describe a problem you’ve solved or a problem you’d like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma — anything of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.

 

5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

 

6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?

 

7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you’ve already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.
