IB와 승마 프로그램을 제공하는 여학교 St. Timothy’s School

St. Timothy’s School 의 입학처장은 필자와 오랜 친구로 지냈는데, Jesse Downs가 새로이 입학처장으로 부임하게 되어 Skype를 통해 며칠 전 처음으로 인사하게 되었다. 처음 미팅을 갖게 되는 학교는 입학처장 혹은 교장이 자기 학교를 소개하는데 많은 시간을 할애하게 되지만, St. Timothy’s의 경우는 필자가 너무나 잘 알고 있는 학교이기 때문에, 처음 만난 Jesse에게 필자의 본인 소개, 가족 소개, 회사 소개, 베트남 지점에 대한 소개로 1시간가량 진행되었다.

친밀함에서 진행되었기 때문에 처음 미국 생활을 하면서 힘들었던 점, 아이들을 기를 때 어려웠던 점, 아이들이 보딩스쿨 다닐 때 에피소드, 심지어는 아이들 뒷담화까지 하며 화기애애한 시간을 보냈다. 개인적인 미팅의 묘미는 이런 것이라고 생각한다. 학교에 대한 정보는 학교 웹사이트, 브로셔를 보면 자세하게 알 수 있는 것이기 때문에 Fact Sheet에 나와있는 정보들을 다시 환기시킬 필요는 없다. 오히려, 본인이 걸어왔던 길, 교육에 대한 생각과 소신, 학생들은 대하는 컨설턴트로서의 태도와 자세, 수속 진행하는 방식들을 통해 회사의 전문성을 어필하는 것이 더 중요한 일이라고 생각한다.

Jesse는 필자가 걸어온 길에 대하여 St. Timothy’s의 학생들에게 소개해도 되겠느냐 물었다. 무려 보딩스쿨의 학부모로 11년 동안의 경험이 지금의 교육컨설턴트가 되게 했고, 교육컨설팅 회사를 만들고, 제주도와 베트남에 지사를 설립할 수 있게 된 근거가 되었기 때문에 St. Timothy’s의 여학생들에게 귀감이 될 수 있다고 했다. 다음은 Jesse가 보낸 편지이다. “I was so flattered!”

  

Good morning/evening Young Hee!

It was an absolute pleasure meeting and speaking with you as well. I loved hearing your parent-turned-entrepreneur story, and especially appreciate your persistence and dedication to continue growing your impact on young people. I am very much looking forward to staying in touch with you and sharing the promise and possibilities of a St. Timothy's education with any girls who are looking for a holistic, empowering, and top-rated education. Based on our conversation, you would have been a great St. Timothy's student yourself!

I would also like to introduce you to our Director of Marketing and Communication, Mandie Boardman (CC'd on this email), who can share some great pictures of St. Timothy's with you. Mandie was telling me that the girls sometimes tease her, because she always has her camera around her neck and is constantly taking pictures. So, the hard part for her might be choosing which pictures to share! Mandie also shared a school profile with me, which I have attached for you as well.

Later today, I will send hard copies of our materials to your office in Vietnam. Once we are able to travel again, it would be great to meet in person. Perhaps we can both see your Vietnamese office for the first time together. :)

St. Timothy's School

St. Timothy’s School은 미국 메릴랜드주 스티븐슨에 위치한 수준 높은 사립 보딩스쿨로 여학교이다. 워싱톤 DC에서는 1시간 거리, 뉴욕에서는 기차로 2시간 거리에 위치한다. 1832년 창립되었으며 1974년 Hannah More Academy와 인수 합병되어 현재의 모습을 갖추게 되었다. 학생 수 200명 남짓으로 모든 수업들이 소규모 세미나 형식으로 진행된다. 국제학생 비율은 30% 정도이며 ESL을 제공한다. 9~12학년을 대상으로 학업 외 균형 잡힌 교육을 위해 승마와 예술수업도 병행한다. 특히 미국의 여자 보딩스쿨로는 최초로 IB Diploma를 도입해 많은 학생들을 명문대에 진학시키고 있는 점은 ST. Timothy’s School 만의 자랑이라고 할 수 있다. IB Chemistry, IB Economics, IB English, IB French, IB Biology 등 총 28개의 수업을 IB Diploma로 제공하고 있어 학생들이 다양하게 공부할 수 있다. 2개의 기숙사를 운영 중인데 2인실과 3인실로 구성되어 있다. 학비는 비용을 제외하고 연간 약 60,150$ 정도이다.

 

IB Signature Features

Winterim Program

St. Timothy’s의 독특한 프로그램은 “Winterim” 프로그램을 꼽을 수 있다. 겨울에 2주간 실험적인 수업 방식을 채택한다. 학생들은 역사유적지, 문화, 경제적, 정치적, Hot Spot인 백악관, 펜타곤, UN, 홀로코스트 뮤지엄, 세계은행, 미 국무부, 링컨센터, 브로드웨이 뮤지컬 극장, 케네디센터 등을 방문 견학하게 된다.

 

Equetrian Program

St. Timothy’s의 Signature 프로그램은 승마이다. 학교가 운영하고 있는 Hamilton-Ireland 승마장은 캠퍼스 밖에 도보 1분 거리에 있다. 승마 프로그램 디렉터인 Matt Payne이외에 2명의 승마 전문 코치가 있는데, 이들이 교내에 상주하므로 승마 프로그램은 일주일 내내 운영된다. 초보부터 상급자 코스까지 완비되어 있고, 개인레슨, 그룹레슨 모두 가능하다.

 

Common Reading Program

매년 여름방학이 되면 교장선생님을 학생뿐 아니라 교사와 직원들이 모두 함께 읽을 도서 2권을 선정한다. 학문적으로 윤택한 학교사회를 만들기 위하여, 여러가지 학과목이 통섭된 주제의 도서로 “Open-Ended”의 질문을 모두에게 던질 수 있는 서적을 선정하여 개학이 되어 학교에 돌아오면 학생과 교사는 감상을 나누고 논평하며 지적인 능력을 연마하게 된다.
