Times Higher Education 발표 2015-2016 세계 대학 순위 (1)

영국의 Times Higher Education에서 2015-2016학년도 세계 대학 순위를 발표하였다. 줄 세우기 하여 평가하기를 좋아하는 우리 나라 사람들에게는 충분히 흥미를 가질만한 발표라고 생각되어 소개해 보기로 한다. 학교를 선택할 때 순위만을 보고 결정할 필요는 없지만, 세계적인 평가 기관에서 선정한 순위는 유학하고자 하는 학교를 선정할 때 참고할 만한 자료가 될 것이다.
우리나라 신문 지상에는 미국의 US News & World Report에서 발표하는 미국 대학 순위가 매년 소개되고, QS와 손 잡은 조선일보에서는 QS 아시아 지역 대학 순위뿐 아니라 QS 세계 대학 랭킹을 소개되어 사람들의 이목을 집중시키곤 한다. 미국의 랭킹에 익숙한 우리에게 Times의 순위는 다소 의아할 수도 있겠다. 그 이유는 각 평가 기관마다 평가 기준이 다르기 때문인데, 특히 외부에서의 학교에 대한 평판은 주관적인 평가 항목이기 때문에 평가 기관마다 많은 차이를 보이게 되어 결과적으로 순위에 큰 영향을 미치게 된다. 주관적인 항목이라는 약점이 있지만, 실질적으로는 학업성취도 못지 않게 일반인들의 학교에 대한 인지도나 지명도 등이 중요한 평가 기준이 되기 때문에 무시할 수 없는 항목이다.
서울대학교 85위, 북경대학교와 동경대학교는 42위, 43위
US News & World Report는 미국 대학교에 후한 점수를 주는 편이고, Times는 유럽 대학교에 관대한 편이어서, 상대적으로 아시아 대학교들은 고전하고 있는 실정이다. 그러나 특이할 점은 중국의 북경대학교와 칭화대학교, 그리고 싱가폴국립대학교가 작년에 비해 꽤 선전했다는 사실이다.
우리나라 서울대학교를 비롯하여 우리나라의 대학들이 어떤 평가를 받는지 대하여 촉각을 곤두세우는데, 서울대학교만이 85위로 100위 안에 겨우 턱걸이하여 실망스런 마음이 생긴다. 서울대학교에 이어 KAIST가 148위, 성균관대학교가 153위, 고려대학교가 251-300위 권, 연세대학교가 301-350위 권을 기록하여 아쉬운 마음을 금할 수 없다.
우리나라 대학교는 국제화 항목에서 낮은 점수 받아.
Times Higher Education에서는 대학 순위를 평가할 때 가장 우선 순위를 두는 항목은 학업 성취도이고, 그 다음 항목으로는 국제화 정도, 연구 실적, 외부 평판, 취업 후 업체에서의 성취도 등이다. 우리나라 대학의 경우 학업성취도나 연구 실적 등은 훌륭하지만, 국제화 정도에서 취약하고 외국에 취업했을 때 학생들의 언어 능력, 국제화, 문화 이해도 등에서 낮은 점수를 받고, 또한 같은 이유로 외부의 평판에서도 낮은 점수를 받기 때문에 학생들의 우수한 학업 능력에도 불구하고 낮은 평가를 받게 되어 안타까움을 사고 있다.
