미국의 의과대학원 어떻게 입학할 수 있나? (1)

 

며칠 전 약학대학원 입학에 관한 정보를 게재했었는데, 의학대학원에 관한 정보도 제공해 달라는 요청이 있어서 몇 차례에 걸쳐 의학대학원에 대하여 소개하려고 합니다. 우선 첫 번 째로 BA/MD Combined Program을 소개하고, 다음에는 의학 전문대학원 Medical School에 관한 정보를 제공하겠습니다.

과거 우리나라에서 의사가 되려면 의예과 2년 의학과 4년 도합 6년의 의과대학 과정을 마쳐야 했지만, 미국의 제도와 유사한 의학전문대학원 제도가 생기면서 학부 4년을 졸업하고 의학대학원 입학 시험인 MEET를 쳐서 의학대학원에 입학해야 합니다. 미국에서는 학부 4년을 마친 학생들이 MCAT라는 전문 의학대학원 시험을 통해 Medical School에 입학합니다.

 

학부 졸업 후 MCAT를 치러 Medical School 에 입학

미국에서는 고등학생이 대학에 진학할 때 SAT 혹은 ACT를 봐야 하듯이, 대학원에 진학할 때에도 학력평가시험을 치러야 합니다. 법과대학원은 LSAT, 경영대학원은 GMAT, 일반 대학원은 GRE를 쳐야 합니다. 의과대학원도 예외는 아니어서 MCAT (Medical College Admission Test)이라 불리는 의대진학을 위한 학력평가시험을 치는데 거의 모든 미국 내 의과대학에서 이 시험 점수를 요구합니다.

 

고교 졸업 후 BA/MD 프로그램에 진학할 수도

의과대학원에 진학하려면 학부의 성적이 좋아야 하고 MCAT 성적도 좋아야 합니다. 그런데 학부를 졸업한 후 의과대학원에 입학하는 것이 일반적인 경우이지만, 고등학교를 졸업한 후 학사학위와 의학박사학위 (BA/MD)를 동시에 제공하는 학위프로그램에 (Combined BA/MD Programs) 진학할 수도 있습니다. 고등학교 졸업 후 바로 의학대학원에 입학하는 것이므로 입학하기는 대단히 어렵지만 비교적 안정적으로 학업을 영위할 수 있다는 이점이 있습니다. 미국 대학교 중 소수의 대학에서 이 제도를 운영하는데 대부분 7년 혹은 8년의 과정입니다.

 

그러나 기존 우리나라의 의과대학 제도와는 조금 다릅니다. 우리나라에서는 의예과 2년을 마치면 자동적으로 본과에 진입하지만 미국의 BA/MD 과정에서는 일정 수준의 학점에 도달하지 못하면 탈락됩니다. 엄청난 경쟁을 뚫고 BA/MD 과정에 입학했다 할 지라도 전부 승진할 수 없기 때문에 학생들의 학업 스트레스는 대단하다고 할 수 있습니다.

BA/MD 에서는 소수의 학생들이 극심한 경쟁을 뚫고 합격

Combined Program은 한 학교 당 극소수의 학생만을 입학 허가를 주기 때문에 입학하기가 아주 힘듭니다. BA/MD 에서 실패한 학생이 Harvard 대학교 등 최우수 명문 대학교에 입학하는 일이 종종 있을 정도로 입학이 어렵습니다. 일반 대학교를 지원할 때 Admission Interview가 필수 과정은 아니지만 BA/MD에 지원할 경우에 인터뷰는 필수 사항이며 단순히 1차로만 끝나지 않고 여러 번 인터뷰를 하기도 합니다.

 

외국인 학생에게도 개장하는지 먼저 확인해야

일반적으로 의과대학원에서 요구하는 입학 조건에는 미국 시민권이나 영주권자 혹은 그 주에 거주하고 있는 주민으로 한정 짓는 경우가 많습니다. 외국인 학생은 원천적으로 의과대학에 입학할 수 없는 경우가 대부분입니다. 시민권자 최소한 영주권자로 입학을 제한하는 학교도 많기 때문에 미국대학원 입학을 위해서 부모가 영주권을 신청하는 경우도 꽤 많습니다. 그러므로 영주권이나 시민권을 소유하지 않은 경우에는 우선 외국인에게도 개방하는 학교인지를 먼저 확인할 필요가 있습니다.
