무조건 명문대학을 가야 한다고 믿는 부모가 있다. 그래서 미국의 최고 명문대를 보내기 위해 어릴 때부터 엄청난 학비를 부담하면서 조기유학을 통해 보딩스쿨에 입학시키고자 한다. 그런데 실상 자신은 명문대학을 나오지도 않았으면서…. 어쩌면 자신이 명문대학을 나오지 않았기 때문에 자녀는 꼭 명문대에 보내 성공적인 인생을 살도록 해야 한다고 믿는 것 같다.
여러분도 잘 아시다시피 좋은 대학에 진학했다고 해서 우수하게 학교를 마칠 수 있는 것도 아니고, 우수한 성적으로 졸업을 했다고 하더라도 성공적인 삶이 보장되는 것도 아니다. 늘 강조했던 것처럼 학생 본인의 의지와 능력에 달려 있는 것이지, 부모의 조력이나 부모의 성원에 달려 있는 것이 아니다. 뚜렷한 목표와 이를 달성하려는 노력과 열정이 결국 성공을 이끌어 낸다는 것은 불변의 진리라 하겠다. 다소 랭킹이 떨어지는 학교에서라도 본인의 열의와 노력에 따라 얼마든지 좋은 결과를 만들어 낼 수 있다. 어떤 면에서는 주눅 들지 않고 최대한 자존감을 가지고 최선을 다할 수 있는 환경일 때 더 좋은 결과가 나타나기도 한다. 따라서 대학의 Brand Name 보다는 본인의 능력, 성격, 취향, 열의, 커리어 목표, 환경 등 다각적인 비교와 분석을 통해 대학을 결정하라는 것도 이런 이유에서다.
그러면 소위 “Prestigious University”, “Elite College”라고 불리는 명문대의 특별함이란 무엇일까? 필자는 대학과 학생과의 밀접한 관계라고 생각한다. 대학에서 학생 개개인에 제공되는 지원, 관리를 통해 학생의 학업과 미래를 위한 커리어에 얼마나 지대한 영향을 미치게 되느냐일 것이다. 아무리 훌륭한 명문대에 입학했더라고 학교에 열의를 갖지 못하고 학교에 제공하는 다양한 혜택을 받지 못하고 소외되어 있다면 Ivy League 졸업장은 빛을 바래어 학생의 인생에 빤짝이는 빛을 줄수 없다.
학교에서는 다양한 Resource를 통해 학생들이 원하는 것을 충족시키는데 많은 노력을 한다. 예를 들어 기업이나 동문들과의 Network을 통한 다양한 인턴십 프로그램들을 학생들에게 제공하고 있고, 필요에 따라서는 인턴십 기간에 필요한 비용을 대학이 제공하기도 한다. 학교 안에서 Career Day, Career Fair를 열어 우수한 기업의 인사담당자들을 불러, 채용관련 세미나를 개최하고 Fair를 통해 즉석에서 인터뷰나 학교 설명회를 개최하기도 한다. 다양한 외국 대학들과의 협약에 의해 한 학기 또는 일년을 외국에서 공부하는 유학 프로그램이나 Erasmus 프로그램이 활성화 되어 있다.
가장 중요한 것은 Networking이라고 할 수 있다. 이는 대학과 기업, 동문 등 여러 갈래로 연결되는데, 이런 Network는 학생들이 사회에 진출하려 할 때, 알게 모르게 큰 힘이 되어 준다. 특히 경영학을 전공하는 학생들에게는 더욱 필요한 요소가 될 것이다.
최근 스페인의 Barcelona, 스위스의 Montreux, Geneva, 독일 Munich 등지에 4개의 캠퍼스를 가지고 있는 EU Business School에서는 비록 Online 상이라 할지라도 의미 있는 행사를 마련했다. 학생들을 위한 Webinar, 동문과의 Network, Job Fair, 유명 CEO초청 강연 등 다양한 프로그램이 5월 달 내내 진행된다. 일반인이나 일반학생들도 EU Business School에서 마련한 행사에 이메일로 참가 신청을 함으로써 참여해 볼 수 있다. 특히 고등학생들을 위하여 EU Business School의 교수들의 경제학 강좌는 퍽 유익할 것이다. 루이뷔통 그룹의 시계부문 사장단의 Jean-Claude Biver의 강연은 좀처럼 접하기 어려운 소중한 기회가 될 것이다.
