Post COVID-19 주목할 만한 직업 군과 유망 전공(1)

언젠가 필자는 미래학에 관심이 많다는 고백을 한 적이 있다. 교육이란 학생의 미래를 결정하는 것이어서 교육과 미래는 밀접하기 때문에 당연히 교육컨설턴트는 미래학에 관심을 가져야 한다.

 

 

필자는 Baby-Boomer 세대이다 625 전쟁이 끝난 이후에 태어났기 때문에 전쟁을 경험하지 않았다. 물론 유년기부터 청년기에 이르기까지 지금과 같은 경제적인 풍요함을 누리지 못했지만, 현실에 좌절하지 않았기 때문에, 경제적 윤택을 누리면서도 “Hell 조선”이라는 MZ세대가 말하는 자조적인 표현을 이해할 수 없었다. 적어도 온 나라가 “하면 된다”는 희망에 차서 경제적인 어려움이나 불안을 딛고, 좌절하지 않았었다. 현재보다 대학생 수가 적긴 했지만, 대학을 졸업하면 직장에 취업할 수 있다는 확신이 있었다.

 

그런데 작년 10월 12일 자 한겨레 신문에 게재된 “취업문, 바늘구멍”이라는 김영배 선임기자의 기사를 인용하면,“대학 졸업을 앞뒀거나 이미 졸업한 청년층 10명 중 6~7명꼴로 구직 활동을 사실상 접고 있는 것으로 조사됐다.”라고 한다. 한국경제연구원이 전국 4년제 대학 3~4학년 재학생 및 졸업생 2713명을 대상으로 8~9월에 걸쳐 실시해 12일 내놓은 ‘취업 인식도 조사’ 결과를 보면, 65.3%는 사실상 구직 단념 상태인 것으로 나타났다. 여기서 구직 단념 비중은 구직 활동 실태 응답 중 ‘거의 안 함’(33.7%), ‘의례적으로 하고 있음’(23.2%), ‘쉬고 있음’(8.4%)을 합한 수치다. ‘적극적으로 구직 활동을 하고 있다’는 응답은 9.6%였다.

 

취업 문이 극도로 좁아져 있는 불행하고 암울한 현실을 반영하는 결과라고 할 수 있는데, 갈수록 치열해지는 취업 경쟁 속에서 청년들이 취업 가능성을 낮게 진단하고 구직 자신감을 잃고 있다고 할 수 있을 것이다. 따라서 청년들의 취업이 유예됨에 따라 미래의 성장 동력 저하로 이어질 것이라고 우려하지 않을 수 없다.

3. Applied Economics and Management

Applied Economics is applying the theories and practices of economics to the real world in order to improve people’s lives. Payscale reports that the average income for a recent graduate is $60,900 and $139,600 for an individual with 10+ years of experience.

4. Operations Research

This major essentially makes you an expert-level problem-solver. Using theory, mathematics, and simulations, operations researchers work toward improved decision-making across a variety of fields and platforms. On average, recent graduates can make an average of $78,400. Those with 10+ years of experience can expect to make around $139,600.

5. Public Accounting

Public accounting majors learn how to create, maintain, and audit a system that details the finances of an individual, business, or organization. After graduation, public accounting majors will perform audits, taxes, consultations, and accounting services, for individuals or businesses. Recent graduates can make $60,000 per year and will eventually make an average of $138,800 in their mid-career.

6. Chemical Engineering/Materials Science & Engineering

Chemical engineers take mathematical and scientific principles and apply them to the design, development, and operation of systems that use chemical processes, like chemical reactors, kinetic systems, or energy conversation processes. Upon graduation, these majors make an average of $74,500 annually and eventually $137,800 per year.

7. Quantitative Business Analysis

Business analysis is the practice of identifying business problems and solving the issues through business solutions. Those recent graduates with less than five years of experience can expect to make $67,900 and an average of $136,200 with 10+ years of experience.

8. Pharmacy

Typically, those hoping to work in the pharmaceutical setting need a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, which takes an average of six years to complete. Undergraduate majors that are suitable to a Pharm. D are biology or chemistry. Pharmacists can make around $66,300 after graduation and $133,200 after 10+ years in the field.

9. Aeronautics and Astronautics

This engineering degree highlights the principles and techniques in the conception, design, implementation, and operation of aerospace and related engineering systems. Recent graduates make an average of $74,000 and those with 10+ years’ experience in the field can expect to make an average of $133,100.

10. Systems Engineering

Systems engineering can encompass a variety of fields, like electrical, mechanical, chemical, or biological. The day-to-day work entails building, analyzing and managing a system. Recent graduates can make $74,000 per year and those in their mid-career can earn an average of $132,900. Given the rising cost of college and the fact that most students graduate with a great deal of student debt, these college choices definitely make sense. Hopefully, though, these majors are combining both a passion and a practicality, and we haven’t seen the end of doing what you love; loving what you do.
