 Khalil Gibran's poem reminds us that the stakes are high as we navigate our role as parents.

 

칼릴 지브란 (Kahlil Gibran ‏1883년 1월 6일 탄생 / 1931년 4월 10일 사망)은 레바논계 미국인으로 예술가이며, 시인, 작가다. 시리아 영토였던 레바논에서 태어나 어릴 때, 미국으로 이민을 갔다. 그는 미국에서 예술을 공부하고, 작품활동을 시작했다. 그의 대표작으로 손꼽히는 1923년작 "예언자"는 영어 산문체로 쓴 철학적 에세이 연작 중 하나이다. 1960년대 반(反) 문화의 창작물 중에서 가장 대중적인 작품이 되었다고 한다. 지브란은 작품에서 기독교를 많이 다루었는데, 특히 영적인 사랑의 주제를 즐겨 다루었다. 그의 시는 영감이 충만한 말로 삶의 화두에 대한 통찰을 보여주었고, 그뿐 아니라 형식적인 언어의 사용으로도 주목받았다. 대학 다닐 때 영문학과 은사님에게 소개 받은 Kahlil Gibran의 시인데 아이들 기르는 부모에게 통찰력을 줄 수 있을 것 같아 소개한다.

It is important to remember that our children are on a path to the "house of tomorrow," a place that we cannot comprehend. Therefore, when obstacles and struggles arise, how are we to know their significance? If we step in to try and lessen the struggle, fix things, or just stop the discomfort, we may be taking away an important learning opportunity that is connected to their destiny. Protection is a primal instinct, yet most of the time, it might be not only unnecessary, but it may also interfere with a "moment of truth" on the way to the house of tomorrow.

 

We need to take the long view and realize that our children need to face difficult situations and discover that they are capable of coming out on the other side. They will not thank us in the short run, but they will respect us and ultimately thank us by putting their lives together and unleashing their greatness in the world. We also get to revel in the moments of triumph, such as prestigious college acceptances, science competitions or music contests. I often had to learn my role as the "bow" with my children. While I could not control their actions, I did have to let go of the short term relationship to set the expectations and demand their best. While there were times when they embraced our expectations with enthusiasm, they were also times when they resisted our expectations, testing us to see if we really believed in what we were saying and in their best. Never easy--but nothing worth doing ever is.
