아이비리그를 비롯한 명문 대학들이 출제한 에세이 (1)

아주 오래 전 필자의 아이가 대학에 지원했을 때는 Common Application을 사용하는 학교가 많지 않았고, 더구나 명문 대학에서는 그다지 Common Application을 선호하지 않았기 때문에 지원하는 학교의 지원서를 우편으로 받아서 학교마다 제시하는 에세이 제목에 따라 에세이를 작성하여 제출해야 했었다. 우편으로 받은 지원서의 인적 사항을 작성하는 곳에는 손글씨로 쓰거나 손글씨에 자신이 없는 경우 구식 타이프라이터를 사용했었다. 따라서 한 학교에 지원서 하나를 작성하는 것이 번거롭고 시간이 꽤 소요되는 일이어서 한 학생이 지원하는 학교가 그다지 많지 않았었다. Reach, Level, Safety 등 3개의 수준 별 학교를 선택하여 고작해야 5-6학교에 원서를 제출 했었다.

 

그러나 몇 년 사이에 IT의 괄목한 만한 성장과 발전에 힘입어 대학 입학과 미국의 명문 보딩 스쿨 지원이 수월해졌다. 그러나 테크노로지 덕분에 수월하게 지원할 수 있게 되었으나, 이런 용이성으로 말미암아 모든 학생들이 많은 학교에 지원하는 현상이 빚어져서 아이비리그를 위시한 명문대학뿐 아니라 미국의 모든 대학들의 입학경쟁률이 상상을 초월할 정도로 심각해졌다. IT 혁명이 주는 하나의 아이러니라고 아니 할 수 없겠다.

 

UC 계열의 대학에 한 번의 Registration을 통하여 8개의 지원을 할 수 있고, 명문대학과 주립대학들이 공통지원서 (Common Application)라는 온라인 지원 시스템을 사용하여 동시에 최대한 20개 대학에 지원할 수 있게 되었다. UC 계열 원서와 Common Application은 약간의 차이점이 있다.  UC에는 지원서에 2개의 에세이를 작성하여 UC의 모든 계열 8개 대학에 접수되는데 비하여 Common Application은 공통의 에세이를 작성하고 학교마다 요구하는 Supplement를 제출해야 한다는 것이다. 이런 문제로 소위 명문대와 아닌 곳, 경쟁력이 있는 대학과 아닌 곳이 구분된다. 소위 Ivy League 대학, 준 Ivy League, New Ivy League 들은 추가로 요구하는 에세이의 양이 많고 쉽지 않은 에세이 토픽을 제시하여 Ivy의 까탈스러움이 원서에서도 그대로 나타난다.

 

아직 지원 마감을 남겨 두고 있어 한창 에세이 작성을 하고 있을 Senior들과 내년의 지원을 위해 먼저 머리를 치켜 들어 Head-Start 하고 있는 Junior를 위하여 각 대학의 에세이 토픽들을 소개한다. 미리 미리 토픽에 대하여 자신의 생각과 아이디어를 정리해 둔다면 훌륭한 에세이를 작성하여 좋은 결과를 얻을 수 있을 것이다.

 

다음은 Common Application에서의 공통 에세이 제목이다. 특별활동에 관한 에세이는 모든 학생이 작성해야 하고 제시된 6개의 토픽 중 1개의 토픽을 선정하여 모두 2개의 에세이를 작성해야 한다.

Please briefly elaborate on one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences in the space below (1000 character maximum).

Your Common Application essay should be the same for all colleges. Do not customize it in any way for individual colleges. Colleges that want customized essay responses will ask for them on a supplement form

 

Please write an essay (250-500 words) on a topic of your choice or on one of the options listed below. This personal essay helps us to become acquainted with you as a person and student, apart from courses, grades, test scores, and other objective data. It will also demonstrate your ability to organize your thoughts and express yourself.

 

Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you. Discuss some issue of personal, local, national, or international concern and its importance to you. Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence. Describe a character in fiction, a historical figure, or a creative work (as in art, music, science, etc.) that has had an influence on you, and explain that influence. A range of academic interests, personal   perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the educational mix. Given your personal background, describe an experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity in a college community, or an encounter that demonstrated the importance of diversity to you. Topic of your choice.
