여름은 독서의 계절

우리 나라에서는 가을을 독서의 계절이라고 부릅니다만, 미국에서는 여름을 독서의 계절이라고 합니다. 학교에서는 여름 방학을 이용하여 소위 Summer Reading Lists를 학생들에게 나누어 주며 독서를 권장합니다. 학교에 따라서는 여름 방학 동안 읽은 책에 대하여 개학 직후 시험을 보기도 하고 수업에 활용하기도 합니다.


 

여름은 독서의 계절 “Hot Summer & Cool Reading”

미국 학생들은 무려 3개월 정도의 여름 방학이 주어지기 때문에 자유시간을 만끽할 수 있는 여름은 독서에 적절한 시기라고 할 수 있습니다. “Hot Summer & Cool Reading”이라고 하여 서늘한 피서지에서 독서 삼매경에 빠지는 것은 퍽 바람직한 일일 것입니다. 혹은 “DEAR” “Drop Everything And Read”라고 하여 하루에 일정한 시간을 정해 놓고 독서를 권장하는 일도 좋을 것 같습니다.

 

TV“Boob Tube” (바보상자)로 부르고, 하루 종일 게으르게 TV 앞 소파에 누워서 감자칩을 입에 달고 사는 한심한 사람들을 “Couch Potato’라고 부릅니다. 사실 Boob Tube TV뿐만 아니라 하루 종일 게임에 매달리게 하는 컴퓨터도 마찬가지 입니다. 여름방학 동안 아이들이 TV만 보고 컴퓨터 게임에만 몰두할 까 걱정하게 됩니다.


 

방학 동안 독서를 Family Activity로 활성화해야

평소에 학교 공부 하느라 미처 읽지 못하였던 책들을 학생들이 독립적으로 직접 선택해서 읽도록 배려할 필요가 있습니다. 여행할 때에도 책을 몇 권 가져가고 산이나 바닷가에 갈 때에도 책을 챙겨가는 것이 중요합니다.


 

또한 자녀에게만 독서를 강요하지 말고 부모가 독서하는 솔선수범의 자세를 보여주는 것이 필요합니다. 독서가 마음 편하게 자연스럽게 온 가족이 참여하는 Family Activity가 되도록 하는 것이 좋겠습니다. 자녀나 부모 모두가 일생을 통하여 계속 공부하는 자세를 갖는 학습자(Life-Long Learner)이며 이와 동시에 서로에게 도움을 주고 도움을 받는다는 의미에서 서로가 서로에 대한 선생님이라고 할 수 있기 때문입니다.
