필자는 A군을 초등학교 5학년 때부터 보아왔다. 미국의 명문 보딩스쿨에 보내기 위해 미국의 주니어보딩스쿨에서 실시하는 여름 캠프에 보냈고, 태국에서 미국의 Duke 대학교 교수가 진행하는 Volunteering Medical Camp에 보내어 다양한 활동과 우수한 학업 성적으로 드디어 명문 보딩 스쿨에 입학했다. 9학년부터 Ivy League 대학에 입학을 준비하기 위해 SAT 준비를 했고 A군이 원하는 Biology 전공으로 Cornell University에 입학했다. 대학에 입학하자마자 A군은 의사가 되기 위한 꿈에 도전하기 위해 학점을 관리하고 1학년부터 MCAT 준비에 들어 갔고, 여름 방학에 한국에 나와 의과대학에서 Shadowing을 하고 틈틈히 의료봉사 활동에 참여했다.

 

 

늘 기대를 저버리지 않았던 A군이 Medical School에 실패했을 때 A군과 A군의 가족은 물론 필자도 꽤 충격을 받았다. A군의 Medical School 지원을 위해 A군의 가족은 미국 영주권을 획득하기 위해 금전적 시간적 투자를 아끼지 않았었다.

 

A군의 학부 성적과 MCAT 성적은 나쁘지 않았다. 지원 에세이도 나쁘지 않았고, 의료봉사활동 등 의대 입학을 위한 특별활동 기록도 흠 잡을 데 없었다. 그런데 문제는 인터뷰였다. A군은 9학년부터 미국의 보딩스쿨에 다녔기 때문에 나쁘지 않은 발음으로 나쁘지 않은 영어를 구사했다. 그러나 A군은 원어민 수준의 완벽한 언어를 구사하지는 못했다. 두 차례 인터뷰를 했음에도 불구하고 A군은 Medical School 진학에 고배를 마셨다. Columbia University에 입학하여 다시 한 번 준비할 수 있는 기회가 있었지만, A군은  의사가 되는 것이 진정 자신의 꿈이었나 심각하게 고민을 거듭한 후, Columbia Graduate School의 Biochemistry 전공을 선택하여 과학자의 길을 걷고 있다.

 

 

많은 학생들이 시민권 영주권이 없으면 미국의 Medical School에 지원할 수 없다고 여긴다. 그러나 정확하지 않은 사실이다. 유학생들이 Harvard, Stanford, Yale 등의 최고 명문의대는 물론 NYU, Pittsburg 의과대학등 유학한 케이스는 상당히 많다. 의과대학에서 반드시 시민권이나 영주권을 가진 학생만 선발한다는 요강은 그리 많지 않다. 유학생 중에도 능력만 있다면 진학할 수 있는 의과대학은 꽤 많다. 한국에서도 의과대학은 최고의 영재들이 지원을 하지만, 미국의 의과대학에도 최고의 영재들이 모여들기 때문에 능력만 출중하다면 외국인 학생에 대하여 불이익을 주지 않는다. 하지만 A군의 경우에서 보았듯이 의과대학에서 지원자의 영어 능력이 상당히 중요하기 때문에 외국인 학생이 우수한 영어 능력을 구사해야 하는 것은 필수사항이다.

 

 

학생의 국적 등 신분과 상관없이 학업적, 인성적, 열정을 두루 갖춘 매력적인 국제학생을 선발하는 미국 의대는 전체 의대의 절반에 가깝다. 특히 주립대 의대에는 국제학생은 아예 선발하지 않을 것이라는 선입견에서 지원조차 하지 않는 경우가 대부분이다. 실제NYU, Boston Univ 등에는 가끔 외국인 유학생을 만날 수 있지만, UCLA나 UCSF 등의 의대에는 국제학생을 거의 찾아 볼 수 없다. 그러나 UCLA나 UCSF에서는 미국인 지원자를 능가하는 우수한 외국인 학생을 발견할 수 없었다고 하니 원래 유학생을 받지 않는 것이 아니라는 것이다.
