향후 UC 계열 대학교 SAT ACT 성적 평가하지 않을 것

 

2021년 5월 University of California, San Diego 교내 신문인 “The Guardian”에 모든 UC계열대학교에서 입학 사정 작업할 때 학생들의 표준화 시험을 어떻게 평가할지에 대한 계획을 다음과 같이 언급했었다.

UC Agrees to No Longer Consider ACT/SAT Scores in Admissions

Ø     2020-22: Standardized Tests Optional for All Applicants

Students applying for college admission during these cycles have the choice on whether or not they include their test scores including the SAT Essay and ACT Writing portions. Applicants will not be penalized for omitting said results, with more emphasis being placed on other parts of an application like one’s class rank or grade point average. Test scores are no longer required when applying for Chancellor’s or Regents scholarships as well.

 

Ø     2022-23: The University of California System Becomes Test Blind for California Students

While still expected to remain test-optional for out-of-state and international students, UC schools will become test blind for Californian applicants. However, schools may require students to submit ACT or SAT scores for non-admission purposes, such as determining which courses students ought to enroll in or whether or not a student is eligible for certain scholarships.

Ø     2025: UC Institutes An Alternative Standardized Exam 

By the Fall of 2025, students will need to take a UC-specific standardized test that is still under development. No details have been released regarding the proposal, and it is unknown yet if international students will take the new UC exam, submit ACT/SAT scores, or have no testing requirement. 

 

 

 

UC 계열 대학교 표준화시험 점수 반영하지 않을 것

그러나 최근 UC 대학교 평이사 회의 발표에 의하면 UC가 대입 평가항목에 대입 표준 시험(SAT/점수를 더 이상 평가하지 않겠다고 공식화했다. UC평이사회는 SAT의 대안으로 편향적이지 않은 시험을 찾을 수 없으므로 앞으로 입학 결정에 대입시험을 사용하지 않을 것이라고 밝혔다. Provost and Executive Vice President - Academic Affairs at University of California인 Michael인 T. Brown 부총장도 향후 모든 UC 계열의 대학교에서는 계열 의대 학교에서는 SAT, ACT 등의 표준화시험성적은 더 이상 사정작업에 반영되지 않을 것이라는 것을 확인해준 바 있다. SAT에 목숨 거는 한국 학생들에게는 정말 파격적인 소식이 아닐 수 없다.

 

 

올 입시에 표준화시험 반영하지 않는 미국 대학은 1815 곳

UC가 발표한 보고서에 따르면 미 전역에서 2022-2023년 입학 가을학기 지원자의 대입 평가 항목에서 SAT 점수를 제외시킨 대학은 전 미국 대학 중 1815곳이다.  

오래전 UC에서는 SAT가 대입 전형에 필수 요소인지에 대한 연구를 거듭했었다. 2018년에는 UC 전형에 표준화시험 성적이 필요하다 했었다. 그래서 Pandemic 이전까지 UC에서는 SAT 성적을 반영했지만, Pandemic 이후 다른 대학들이 그렇듯이 Test-Optional으로 바꿨고, 올해 지원에서는 또다시 Test-Blind로 정책을 변경했다. 작년까지 UC에서는 SAT를 대체할 수 있는 시험을 2025년까지 개발할 것이라는 소식이 있었지만, 올해 드디어 앞으로도 UC 계열에서는 표준화 시험 점수를 사정 작업에 반영하지 않을 것이라는 쇼킹한 뉴스를 내보냈다.

 

 

다양한 활동과 지원 에세이 작성에 더욱 신경 써야

우리나라 학생들은 선호하는 대학교인 UCLA를 비롯하여 최상의 명문대학이라고 일컬어지는 UC Berkeley 등 UC 대학을 지원하는 한국 학생들은 이제 SAT 등의 시험 성적에만 정신을 쏟을 것이 아니라 봉사활동, 특별활동, 논문 출판, 등 다양한 활동에 대하여 신경을 쓰고 최고의 Quality 에세이를 작성하는 방법을 고민해봐야 할 것이다.
